Radiant's goal is to bring one of the world's first factory-constructed microreactors to market.
The Role

Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the world’s first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The company’s first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt failsafe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to five years without the need to refuel. Portable nuclear power with rapid deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators, and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiant’s unique, practical approach to nuclear development utilizes modern software engineering to rapidly achieve safe, factory-built microreactors that leverage existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor next year at the Idaho National Laboratory, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.

Regulatory Systems Engineer

Radiant is seeking a highly skilled Regulatory Systems Engineer to support the regulatory compliance and safety analysis of our cutting-edge reactor demonstrations. You will play a crucial role in ensuring our engineering design and product integration efforts comply with nuclear regulatory requirements. This position will translate technical design information into comprehensive regulatory documentation, performing safety and risk analyses, and managing communications with regulators and stakeholders. This individual requires a deep understanding of nuclear engineering principles, strong analytical capabilities, and exceptional technical writing skills to support the safe and compliant development of Radiant’s reactor systems across their lifecycle.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Translate engineering design and product integration efforts into accurate and comprehensive regulatory documentation that meets the standards of nuclear regulatory bodies, ensuring clarity and compliance.
  • Develop and conduct critical analyses, including:
    • Dose-Consequence Analysis to evaluate radiological impacts.
    • Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) to quantify system risks.
    • Hazards and Operability Studies (HazOp) to identify operational hazards.
    • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) to assess process-related risks.
    • Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to evaluate potential system failures and their impacts.
  • Manage and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) from regulatory bodies and stakeholders, ensuring timely, accurate, and professional communication.
  • Develop and implement strategies to manage technical and regulatory risks, ensuring alignment with project objectives and safety requirements.
  • Ensure all documentation associated with Radiant reactor demonstrations is comprehensive, self-consistent, and maintained throughout the system lifecycle, adhering to regulatory and industry standards.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in nuclear engineering or a closely related field (e.g., mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or physics with a nuclear focus)
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience with multi-physics simulations and transient analysis of reactor systems, including familiarity with tools such as MCNP, RELAP5, or similar software.
  • Experience in nuclear regulatory compliance, safety analysis, or risk assessment (e.g., PRA, HazOp, PHA, or FMEA).
  • Proficiency in performing complex safety and risk analyses, with a focus on nuclear reactor systems.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong technical writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and regulatory-compliant documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with regulators, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to accomplish our mission.

What We Do

Radiant is a clean energy startup building a nuclear microreactor. A climate-friendly alternative to diesel generators, Radiant's Kaleidos 1MW microreactor will be the world's first portable, zero-emissions power source that works anywhere. We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios.

Why Work With Us

Our world-class team has prior experience in complex hardware development from SpaceX, McMaster, The Boring Company, and renowned national laboratories that define our mentality to radically improve our microreactors. We care deeply about our mission to reduce carbon emissions, and have fun while doing so from trivia nights to ski retreats.
