Job Summary: 

The Regulatory Compliance Manager is responsible for the development, execution, and oversight of regulatory compliance programs and systems for Bell & Evans and its subsidiary sites, including regulatory label and artwork approval, National Organic Program compliance, and animal raising, product, and processing claims. This position is expected to lead continuous improvement initiatives for areas of responsibility.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the organization’s subject matter expert on regulatory compliance in areas of export requirements, animal raising and processing claims, and other special statements and product claims (Gluten free, Organic, Natural, Non-GMO). 
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve regulatory compliance programs, including documentation to support the use of animal raising claims (i.e., Raised Without Antibiotics, diet/living condition claims), and 3rd party certification standards (i.e., GAP). Ensure programs and documentation include procedures based on industry best practices and measurements for effectiveness verification.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance of all finished product labels and specifications by reviewing and approving content against applicable USDA and FDA regulations.
  • Manages the internal and external label approval process by collaborating with cross-functional teams, submitting labels through USDA’s Label Submission and Approval System (LSAS), and maintaining labeling records.
  • Supports New Product Development (NPD) and Management of Change (MOC) processes by providing regulatory guidance for all products, processes, suppliers, and copackers.
  • Manages compliance to the Organic System Plans for all sites by establishing expectations for product segregation, ingredients, processing aids, materials used, and production systems.
  • Serves as the liaison for the organization’s organic certification body; proactively communicates certification needs in order to ensure efficient processes for organic product approvals. Maintains documentation to support the integrity of the organic system.
  • Researches and proactively monitors new and emerging regulatory requirements at the federal, state, and local level.
  • Responsible for the coaching and development of direct reports by defining individual performance objectives and providing consistent feedback.
  • Establishes key performance indicators for areas of ownership in order to measure success against organizational objectives and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Take a proactive role in assuring safe, quality products are produced by immediately addressing any safety or quality concerns. Participate actively in all company meetings.
  • Provide support to the Quality Assurance department by developing a knowledge of the business to participate in projects, internal and external audits, and other duties as assigned.

 Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • 1 Direct Report:        Food Safety Specialist (Exempt)

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Nutrition, or related field and 7+ years’ experience in food safety/quality assurance management in the food industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3+ years of leadership experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency with interpreting and applying U.S. food regulations; meat or poultry experience preferred
  • Certifications in Advanced HACCP and/or PCQI for Human Food

  • Ability for intermittent business travel

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Nutrition, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 7+ years of experience in food safety or quality assurance management in the food industry
  • 3+ years of leadership experience
  • Experience interpreting and applying U.S. food regulations
  • Meat or poultry experience
  • Certification in Advanced HACCP and/or PCQI for Human Food
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in project management, team collaboration, and continuous improvement
