Job Description

SUMMARY: Under general supervision plans, coordinates, and implements adult and youth recreation and aquatic programs at Lasker Pool. Assists with daily aquatic operations, ensures public safety and compliance with health and safety regulations, supervises seasonal and part-time staff, and supports overall recreation programming and facility operations.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists with coordination of daily operations at Lasker Pool.
  • Monitors pool operations to ensure compliance with safety standards, City policies, and health department regulations.
  • Performs routine pool maintenance including checking circulation systems, cleaning strainers, backwashing, vacuuming, and related tasks.
  • Safely handles pool chemicals and maintains proper water balance in accordance with established health standards.
  • Maintains daily chemical logs, maintenance records, and required reports.
  • Conducts routine facility inspections to ensure cleanliness and safe operating conditions.
  • Assists in responding to aquatic emergencies and ensures adherence to emergency action plans.
  • Performs program coordination; assists and implements adult and youth activities.
  • Register new members; prints membership cards; makes facility reservations; answers phone calls regarding recreation programs and services.
  • Performs customer service; answers questions; conducts facility tours; provides assistance regarding the use of facility equipment; responds to complaints from participants.
  • Provides work direction and training to seasonal and part-time staff.
  • Performs general office duties, including filing, copying and reports preparation.
  • Assists with overseeing functions of the Lasker Pool; ensures transactions are conducted in accordance with established policies.
  • Conducts general cleaning of the facility.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge:

  • City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Principles and practices of recreational programing and promotion.
  • Fitness equipment use.
  • City codes and ordinances.
  • Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.

Skill in:

  • Handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
  • Providing efficient customer service.
  • Understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
  • Explaining City policies and procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate Degree in Recreation Administration or a closely related field; AND two years’ experience in recreation operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must demonstrate strong swimming ability sufficient to perform aquatic rescues.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s license.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification (required or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe).
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
  • CPR/AED Certification.
  • Additional certifications may be required based on operational needs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed at City parks, recreation centers, aquatic facilities, and special event venues. Duties require moderate physical activity including standing, walking, bending, lifting, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, and handling pool chemicals. Must possess strong swimming ability and be able to enter the water quickly to assist in emergency situations.

Skills Required
