THIS POSITION IS FOR SKATE GUARDS AT THE JFK COLISEUM.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Performs administrative duties, light to moderate manual labor duties, and/or other activities at various City parks and facilities; performs directly related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform administrative tasks, light to moderate labor duties, customer service, and other activities. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other City employees, and the public. The principal duties of this class are performed in both an indoor and outdoor environment, sometimes in uncomfortable weather conditions.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK:

  • Performs administrative tasks including greeting patrons, completing attendance tally, incident, and accident forms, recording data, enforcing rules, and handing out first aid supplies;
  • Performs minor custodial tasks, including mopping bathhouse floors, sweeping, cleaning restrooms, emptying garbage cans, and picking up paper and litter;
  • Cleans and maintains work area;
  • Monitors aquatic area to ensure safekeeping of patrons’ belongings;
  • Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions;
  • Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions;
  • Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments;
  • Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly;
  • Coordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency; and
  • Performs additional duties as required by the classification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Some knowledge of operating procedures associated with assigned area within the Parks, Recreation, and Cemetery Department;
  • Some knowledge of safety procedures involved in assigned area;
  • Some knowledge of labor and custodial fundamentals;
  • Ability to work in harmony within a small group;
  • Ability to comprehend and follow safety rules and regulations;
  • Ability to complete assignments that require good physical condition;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Completion of eighth grade and at least 14 years of age (16 years of age or older preferred); and
  • Zero to two years of work or volunteer experience; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPR, First Aid, and/or Shallow Water Lifeguard Certifications (preferred).

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work safely in a park environment;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to use hand tools;
  • Sufficient strength and endurance, with or without reasonable accommodation to lift, carry and move objects, through a full range of motion, up to 10 pounds occasionally, 5 pounds frequently and 2 pounds consistently;
  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, push, pull, and grasp repetitively in various recreation areas throughout the City.

Skills Required

  • Completion of eighth grade
  • At least 14 years of age; age 16 or older preferred
  • Zero to two years of work or volunteer experience, or equivalent combination of experience and training
  • CPR certification
  • First Aid certification
  • Shallow Water Lifeguard certification
  • Ability to perform physical duties including standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and lifting up to 10 pounds occasionally
