SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Receiving Operator is responsible for receiving, labeling and storing all raw materials and packaging supplies needed to support plant operations. Loads and unloads railcars, tank trucks of raw materials, and the same with by-products.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Promotes a safe work environment for self and others by using knowledge of unloading process and SOPs to assure safety of people and environment. 
  • Receives, unloads and labels raw material chemicals.
  • Packages supplies, spare parts and other supplies following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and utilizing the manufacturing computer system (BPCS). Monitors status and move to point of use storage after QC release.
  • Determines bulk raw material delivery schedule based on plant usage rates and railroad availability. Submits order for railroad. 
  • Receives samples and unloads bulk raw materials in railcars or tank trucks as space and material become available.
  • Safely operates a forklift and yard truck.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Able to lift 60-75 lbs.
  • Must be able to follow written instructions and standard operating procedures. 
  • Must be able to perform mathematical calculations of material usage rates and tank volumes, as well as calculating maximum loading capacity.

    DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/ NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Other duties assigned with or without accommodation.
  • Assures raw materials are handled with care to avoid container damage which could result in loss or contamination of critical raw materials.
  • Serves as a member of various employee involvement teams and committees, such as Lean/Six Sigma and/or Cost Savings, to improve the workplace, increase efficiency and improve productivity.
  • Contributes to the safety culture by participating in site wide safety initiatives.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Experience:

Must have working knowledge of material handling equipment, including fork trucks. 

Experience in chemical processing or chemical receiving is required. 

Must also have an understanding of pump and flow schematics for tanker and railcar loading and unloading.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

Other Skills/Competencies:

Basic knowledge of pumps, valves and other bulk liquid handling equipment is desired.

Knowledge of raw material and finished product chemical properties to better identify and respond to issues. 

Hazmat Certification.

Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office applications.

Ability to interact with business computer systems. 

Interpersonal Savvy, Problem Solving, Organizing, Functional/ Technical Skills,

Timely Decision Making

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS:

  • Reports to Transportation Manager.
  • Receiving, loading, and unloading performed without immediate supervision, therefore, personal judgment must be exercised in pacing the work and in maintaining safe conditions.
  • Understands that unsafe work habits or improper use of equipment could result in serious injuries to self and others due to the potentially dangerous nature of the equipment and the chemicals being processed.
  • Interacts routinely with production personnel in making materials available.
  • Multiple priorities require the ability to fluctuate duties to accommodate delivery schedules.

    WORKING CONDITION:

  • Duties performed outdoors with extremes of temperature and precipitation and in a heated but uncooled warehouse. 
  • Dirty conditions and chemical fumes are occasionally present in the work areas.
  • Hazardous materials are routinely handled by receiving operators, which increases the potentials for spills, fires or burns. 
  • Must handle average to heavy weight materials by hand. Material handling devices (e.g., hand truck, fork truck, and conveyors) are used when possible, but use of proper lifting and movement techniques is necessary to prevent injury.
  • Must be able to physically negotiate stairs and evacuation ladders, to wear and operate safety equipment, and drive forklifts.
  • Must be able to wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hat, etc., as deemed necessary for each job task.
  • Must be able to work assigned shift and occasional overtime as needed.
