Welcome to MORSE!
The Role
The R&D Materials Engineer will develop innovative materials for autonomous vehicles and sensor systems. Responsibilities include designing and developing novel materials, processing techniques, and collaborating with teams to create prototypes for testing. The role requires a deep understanding of materials science and processing methods to solve complex engineering problems.
Summary Generated by Built In

MORSE is an innovative, employee-owned, tech company located in Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA specializing in solving multi-disciplinary problems faced by the US National Security Ecosystem. Our specially selected team of engineers, software developers and scientists develop algorithms, software integrated prototypes and solutions for Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Manned and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Mission Planning, and Situational Awareness.

Job Summary

The R&D Materials Engineer at MORSE Corp will develop first-of-a-kind materials for components of autonomous vehicles, sensor systems and other electromechanical systems with unique characteristics enabled by these materials. The candidate should be able to leverage a deep understanding of both the inherent material properties and the methods used for materials processing and manufacture. The R&D Materials Engineer will develop lab-scale processing and manufacturing equipment that alters conventional material systems that include polymers, metals, glasses, ceramics, and composites to achieve fundamentally new material properties. The candidate will then leverage these new materials to develop prototype components for characterization, demonstrations, and integration into larger systems for developmental testing. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to learn new domains quickly and break complex materials problems down into solvable and testable tasks to enable a rapid & iterate material design approach.  The candidate will work in a small team and be responsible for both collaboratively and individually perform experiment design, execution, analysis and iteration.

Responsibilities

  • Rapid development of materials and components through prototyping and built-and-test methods

  • Rapid materials discovery through scientific method: hypothesis, test development, and test execution & associated analysis

  • Development of custom materials processing and manufacturing techniques for the design of novel materials

  • Design and formulation of polymeric and composite materials

  • Manufacturing of components with novel material systems

  • Maturation of processing and manufacturing equipment and processes for improved reliability in component fabrication

  • Collaboration with both in-house employees and out-of-house partners and vendors for the design, evaluation and manufacturing of novel material systems

Skills and Requirements

  • US CITIZENSHIP REQUIRED and the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance

  • Experience with materials processing and manufacturing technologies

  • An understanding of materials science and the chemical interactions within material systems

  • Knowledgeable of design-of-experiment techniques

  • Familiarity with materials characterization techniques such as spectroscopy, TGA, tensile/compression testing, etc.

  • Familiarity with common best practices and risk evaluation for lab and materials test safety.

  • Integration of COTS electromechanical systems for prototyping of manufacturing equipment

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or other related field

  • Multidisciplinary (materials, chemistry, mechanical, and/or electrical) experience

  • Knowledge of fundamental chemistry (organic and inorganic) is a plus

  • Experience with mechanical design and structural analysis a plus
