What We’re Looking For
Michael Baker is seeking a talented Railroad Coordination Specialist with a specialization in the coordination, design, and review of public agency projects on, over, or adjacent to railroad right-of-way, to help make a difference in our Rail and Transit group. The ideal candidate will be located in Chicago, Cleveland, Moon Township (Pittsburgh), or Harrisburg, with consideration for remote locations for exceptional candidates. Under limited supervision, the candidate will support design and construction projects on behalf of Michael Baker and our clients to railroad partners by providing technical support, plan review, and active outreach and coordination. The candidate may also be asked to support other types of roadway and railroad projects nationally.
What You’ll Do
- Review project specifications and confer with managers to determine assistance required in plan preparation, evaluation of project conditions, design changes and reports.
- Estimate effort for tasks and obtain approval from internal and external clients
- Assist in managing task budgets
- Build intimate familiarity with railroad public projects manuals and policy
- Review design and contract plans and specifications from a railroad perspective
- Advise internal and external client engineers on alternate methods of solving problems to expedite railroad approvals.
- Attend on site or virtual meetings with public agency and/or railroad representatives as required
- Perform internal review of construction submittals for conformance with approved contract plans and railroad policies
- Perform research to support project tasks.
- Train and assist others in standard processes for Public Projects
- Manage the collection, compilation, and analysis of project files
- Provide detailed weekly and on demand project accounting and status reporting
- Obtain all required railroad safety certifications and trainings and support safety initiatives
- Other duties as assigned.
What You Need To Succeed
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or similar
- 10+ years of demonstrated experience on relevant projects
- PE license with NCEES record a plus
- Project experience with public agencies and familiarity with roadway, bridge, and drainage standards desired
- Project experience with Class I Railroads and familiarity with AREMA standards desired
- Ability to travel to other office and job site locations as needed. 10%-25% travel is anticipated.
- Experience reviewing construction plans and specifications
- Experience in servicing multiple projects concurrently
- Possess client and stakeholder management skills and ability to enhance and develop solid client relationships
- Ability to lead a team
- Strong initiative and ability to work independently
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills and problem-solving ability
- Strong work ethic and integrity
Compensation
The salary range has been determined to be between $105,000 and $145,000 for this position, with consideration for location, licensure, and experience.

- Proven experience in review of plans and specifications for roadway, drainage, and/or bridge projects, particularly near railroads
- Demonstrated ability to service multiple projects concurrently
- Possess strong initiative and demonstrate a proactive, collaborative approach to project development and communication with project team members, clients, contractors, and public agencies
- Relationships with Class I Railroad(s) and understanding of coordination requirements and preferences
- Willingness and ability to mentor and advise young staff on railroad coordination, operations, and engineering best practices
