Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Outrider is responsible for escorting (while on horseback), Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses to the Post and assists in returning of all horses to the unsaddling area and/or assists in the control of any horse which might cause injury to a jockey or others in performing the following duties.
While working on horseback, ensures that the field arrives at the Starting Gate at the scheduled post time.
Is present on the racing surface, mounted and ready to assist in the control of any unruly horse or to always recapture any loose horse during times when horses are permitted on the racing surface for exercising, training, or racing.
Ensures that all persons exercising horses during training hours or accompanying horses to the Starting Gate during training and/or racing hours wear a protective helmet and vest.
Maintains constant radio contact with the Stewards from the time the horses leave the Paddock until the start of each race.
Informs the Stewards if a jockey or jockeys are claiming an objection in a race or if the race was clear with no objections.
Ensures that exercise personnel follow track safety rules and report any person(s) who refuse to comply.
Other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
A High School Diploma or GED; College experience preferred.
At least 1 year of experience in the racetrack industry.
Must have experience working around Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses; must be able to supply and care for their own ponies at all times.
Excellent verbal, mathematics, interpersonal, communication and writing skills.
Ability to troubleshoot problems, offer recommendations, decision making, ability to make quick accurate decisions independently.
Extensive equine knowledge, types of racing and all racing industry requirements.
Must be able to obtain an Indiana Horse Racing Commission License.

Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a team member encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Horseshoe Indianapolis is a smoking establishment, therefore must be able to work in a smoking environment. Must be able to work in a highly populated, fast-paced, and noisy environment.
