Job Overview

This position is a high-level manager reporting directly to the Sr. Director of R&D and will be responsible for managing the Engineering department and leading all facets of the development of Bastian R&D Products including the mechanical, electrical, controls, and robotics engineering. The Engineering Manager will lead a diverse team of professionals responsible for designing automation systems including but not limited to robotics, shuttles, vision, innovative conveyor solutions, components for Autonomous Vehicles, and any other R&D project that gives Bastian Solutions a competitive advantage. This leader is required to mentor, train, schedule, project manage, and lead the team through a multitude of challenging projects, ultimately driving success for the customer, the business and the team.

The Bastian R&D Engineering Manager's normal involvement is the day-to-day interaction with and leadership of the engineers tasked with designing systems to meet the customer's expectations within the set budget and the capabilities of the manufacturing team at Bastian Labs. The Engineering Manager is responsible for understanding and controlling Bastian R&D’s risk from technical, quality and product standpoints. The Engineering Manager ensures his team works collaboratively with the internal customers, Project Management and Manufacturing teams and plays a key role in ensuring we are delivering a system as agreed to in the Functional Specifications and Statements of Work. Keeping in the budget, designing in quality and designing for success are key elements of a successful engineering project. The Engineering Manager's success will depend largely on his/her leadership, communications ability, technical knowledge, performance, and capability to manage others and the details of multiple projects; technical and problem-solving skills are of high importance.

General Job Duties

• Maintain a consistently positive, enthusiastic attitude.
• Work closely with the R&D Director to ensure corporate policies and goals are understood and efforts are made to ensure Bastian Labs is a key part of the global company through our continued growth.
• Communicate with the other Bastian managers regarding collaborative efforts and universal Business Unit goals so that the company and our employees can grow and prosper together.
• Submit Annual Review inputs and personal goals for all of your direct reports
• Review processes, products and standards for accuracy and technical issues.
• Lead the process for design and code reviews, mandatory for all projects
• Work as a team - take trips into the field or with a customer on a biannual basis.
• Aid in educating the customer, in order for customer to commit to the design parameters and provide acceptance in writing! Secondarily, assist to document our assumptions as part of the proposal (ensure that they are included in the contract).
• Estimate and direct internal Bastian Labs resources necessary to successfully complete the project. Communicate with other Bastian Solutions managers current and anticipated needs.
• Take ownership of Bastian Labs' engineering team, their designs, and their controls and code.
• Responsible for all incentive programs for the Engineering Department
• Responsible for hiring and training resources when the need arises.
• Developing safety guidelines for all products and processes that enter/leave the facility. Acting as liaison for Corporate Safety Requirements
• Anticipate problems and take action rather than reacting.
• Able and willing to train new Bastian Labs employees.
• Complete all administrative tasks/paperwork in timely manner.
• Ensure all members of your team enter their timesheet data on time every week.
• Complete expense reports in a timely manner
• Any and all other job duties as assigned

• Set and manage Timelines and Goals for you and your team utilizing the scheduling tools available.
• Manage, Mentor and Grow all resources with strategic purpose.
• Attend and/or lead all Bastian Labs and customer meetings on time and prepared.
• Master product information through training and personal efforts. Take charge of your training requirements and request the training you and your team need.
• Maintain highest standards of professional appearance and manner in the office and especially with customers and suppliers
• Communicate with other Bastian Labs team members effectively. Keep coordinator advised of schedule. Check and use voice mail / e-mail diligently.
• Maintain the team relationship. Communicate strategic information regarding suppliers, customers and competition.
• Lead all efforts of standardization, product development, R&D and process development for the Business Unit
• Lead all efforts pertaining to Quality Control and Quality Assurance processes

Requirements

• Bachelors of Engineering (*CS,*EE,ME) required. Masters Degree in Business or Engineering or P.E. preferred. Experience and/or education in basic financials, conversant with concepts of project ROI, discounted cash flows, simple and compound interest and depreciation.
• Must be extremely literate with MS Office software suite (particularly MS Excel).
• AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Visual Studios, GitHub, MS Project, and JIRA experience preferred.
• A strong background in Software and or Embedded development experience is preferred.
• Previous R&D experience preferred.
• Must have a solid track record of developing and applying contemporary automation systems.
• Ability to travel to North America/Europe at least once per year.
