The Role
Lead plant quality function ensuring compliance to ISO9001/IATF 16949 and customer requirements (PPAP). Manage quality staff, audits (LPA), quarantined goods disposition, scrap/rework control, corrective actions, KPIs, training, budgeting, and continuous improvement (Kaizen/GEAR). Liaise with customers and internal departments, run daily/weekly meetings, and enforce safety and confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities:          

  • Liaise with customers and coordinate with staff and internal departments to effectively meet PPAP requirements for the introduction of new products, and subsequent revisions of engineering changes.
  • Direct quality staff to effectively monitor production to consistent required quality levels.
  • Monitor and assist in the dispositioning of quarantined goods, with the goal of maintaining zero inventory in these areas.
  • Keeps management informed of quality product and liaison with all plant departments and customers.
  • Monitor plant scrap and rework, customer rejections and returns.
  • In the event of receiving a customer concern (verbal or electronic), issue a customer/concern report to the MDS team.
  • Stop further processing and inform the area supervisor or manager responsible when becoming aware that a product or process is in non-conformance.
  • Ensures business system is established, implemented and maintained in accordance with the current ISO9001/IATF 16949 standards, corporate and customer specific requirements.
  • Ensure compliance to all health and safety rules and housekeeping principals. Ensure substandard conditions and practices identified in plant safety audits are corrected.
  • Prepare reports and key measureable indicators each month. Carry out corrective actions if necessary and report information out in a monthly management review meeting.
  • Attend management report-out meeting on a weekly basis; Production and Fast Response Meetings on a daily basis.
  • Head the layered process audits (LPA) process and assure compliance as required.
  • Conduct department start-up meetings on a daily basis.
  • Provide oversight and direction and delegate responsibilities to all members in the department. 
  • Manage performance: communicate job expectations and conduct employee evaluations for all department members on an end of probation basis and an annual basis.
  • Coach, counsel, mentor and discipline employees with the assistance of human resources and senior management as necessary.
  • Work with human resources to interview and select candidates to fill vacancies within the department.
  • Determine employee development and/or training needs for department members on an annual basis. Prepare annual training plan and submit to the human resources department.
  • Complete training effectiveness evaluation forms and submit to the human resources department.
  • Participate in succession planning activities including career development.
  • Assist with job analysis on a yearly basis.
  • Prepare departmental budget on an annual basis.
  • Follow all departmental and general procedures where applicable. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager.
  • Abide by all company safety rules, responsibilities, policies, and procedures including the legislative requirements of the OHSA. 
  • Adopt, practice, and promote Kaizen principles; participate in Kaizen and GEAR activities. Encourage continuous improvement efforts within the department and ensure submission of individual and team GEARs to achieve one hundred percent participation.
  • Must appropriately handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality at all times.

Skills Required

  • Knowledge of PPAP process and ability to coordinate PPAP submissions
  • Understanding and implementation of ISO9001 and IATF 16949 quality management systems
  • Experience directing quality staff and monitoring production quality levels
  • Ability to perform and lead Layered Process Audits (LPA)
  • Experience managing quarantined goods, scrap, rework, and customer returns
  • Capability to prepare monthly reports, KPIs and drive corrective actions
  • Conduct employee performance management, coaching, disciplinary actions, and evaluations
  • Develop and deliver training plans and evaluate training effectiveness
  • Participate in continuous improvement (Kaizen/GEAR) activities
  • Adherence to OHSA health and safety requirements and plant housekeeping principles
  • Prepare and manage departmental annual budget
  • Maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information
