The Quality Control Manager is responsible for leading and managing all quality control activities within the manufacturing environment to ensure products meet customer specifications, engineering requirements, and company quality standards. This position oversees inspections, nonconformance management, corrective actions, supplier quality initiatives, and production quality processes while partnering closely with Engineering, Production, Purchasing, and Operations.

The Quality Control Manager serves as the primary quality leader for manufacturing operations, driving continuous improvement initiatives, reducing defects and rework, improving process consistency, and ensuring customer expectations are met through effective quality controls and disciplined execution.
 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Quality Ownership

  • Lead, coach, develop, and evaluate Quality Control personnel to ensure performance expectations and quality objectives are achieved.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, quality, safety, and continuous improvement throughout manufacturing operations.
  • Establish departmental priorities, workloads, training programs, and staffing needs.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, approve timecards and time off requests, and ensure team members receive appropriate training and development.
  • Provide guidance and support to production personnel regarding quality requirements, inspection methods, and best practices.

Manufacturing Quality Control

  • Oversee incoming, in-process, and final product inspections to verify compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, work instructions, and customer requirements.
  • Ensure inspection activities are consistently performed and documented in accordance with established procedures.
  • Review inspection data, identify trends, and develop corrective actions to improve product quality.
  • Monitor manufacturing operations for adherence to quality standards and process controls.
  • Work directly with production teams to minimize scrap, rework, defects, and customer quality concerns.
  • Approve product acceptance, conditional acceptance, or rejection as appropriate.

Nonconformance & Corrective Action Management

  • Lead investigations involving nonconforming materials, products, or processes.
  • Ensure nonconforming products are properly identified, documented, segregated, and dispositioned.
  • Facilitate root cause analysis activities using structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Manage corrective action requests and ensure timely implementation and verification of corrective actions.
  • Monitor corrective action effectiveness and drive systemic improvements to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain records of quality issues, investigations, and resolutions.

Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze quality metrics and manufacturing performance data to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support Lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives throughout operations.
  • Develop and implement process improvements that improve quality, productivity, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
  • Utilize quality tools and statistical methods to improve process capability and product consistency.

Supplier Quality & Purchasing Support

  • Partner with Purchasing and Supply Chain teams to investigate supplier quality issues and drive corrective actions.
  • Review supplier nonconformances and assist in supplier evaluation and performance monitoring.
  • Support supplier qualification activities and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate containment, rework, replacement, or corrective action efforts involving purchased materials and components.

Engineering & Change Management

  • Partner with Engineering and Manufacturing teams on Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), design revisions, and process changes.
  • Verify quality requirements are properly implemented before product release.
  • Participate in product development, process improvement, and manufacturing review activities.
  • Assist in reviewing specifications, tolerances, and inspection requirements to ensure manufacturability and quality expectations are met.

Quality Systems & Compliance

  • Maintain quality procedures, inspection processes, and quality records necessary to support operational requirements.
  • Support customer, internal, and third-party audits as needed.
  • Ensure quality-related documentation is accurate, current, and properly maintained.
  • Monitor key quality performance indicators and provide regular reports to management.
  • Support compliance with applicable industry standards, customer requirements, and company policies.

Warehouse & Material Control

  • Ensure proper identification, traceability, inspection status, and control of materials throughout production and warehouse operations.
  • Conduct periodic warehouse and inventory quality reviews to verify compliance with established processes.
  • Support inventory accuracy initiatives and material disposition activities.
  • Ensure quality-controlled areas meet established housekeeping and organization standards.

Safety & Operational Support

  • Promote a safe working environment and ensure compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in safety initiatives, investigations, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ensure quality activities are performed safely and in accordance with applicable environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Support overall business objectives through cross-functional collaboration and operational excellence.
Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive quality experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, industrial equipment, machinery, or similar production environment.
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of quality control principles, inspection methodologies, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, assembly drawings, bills of material, and technical specifications.
  • Experience conducting root cause analysis and driving corrective actions.
  • Knowledge of dimensional inspection techniques and use of precision measuring equipment.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and ERP systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, customers, suppliers, and management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Quality Management, or related discipline.
  • Experience within material handling equipment, industrial equipment manufacturing, automation systems, or heavy fabrication environments.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 quality management principles and auditing practices.
  • Experience with GD&T, dimensional tolerancing, process capability analysis, and statistical process control.
  • ASQ certifications such as Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Certified Quality Manager (CQM), or Certified Quality Auditor (CQA).
  • Experience with SYSPRO or similar manufacturing ERP systems.
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement training and experience.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and move throughout office, manufacturing, warehouse, and production environments.
  • Ability to stand and walk on concrete surfaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to frequently use hands and fingers to operate computers, measuring instruments, and quality inspection equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access elevated work platforms when necessary.
  • Ability to visually inspect products, components, and manufacturing processes, including close vision, color perception, and depth perception.
  • May be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, hearing protection, gloves, hard hats, and other safety equipment as required.
  • Must be able to work in environments with exposure to manufacturing equipment, forklifts, noise, dust, vibration, and varying temperatures.
