Public Safety Officer
Shift: Overnight (10:00 PM-6:00 AM)

Maryville University is seeking a dedicated and service-oriented Public Safety Officer to join our campus safety team. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about public service, community engagement, emergency response, and helping others. Public Safety Officers play a critical role in maintaining a secure campus environment by conducting proactive patrols, responding to emergencies, assisting the community, and enforcing university policies and applicable laws.
What You'll DoCampus Safety & SecurityConduct proactive foot and vehicle patrols across campus to maintain a safe and secure environment.
Monitor campus facilities and grounds, identify safety concerns, and ensure building security.
Respond to security alarms, fire alarms, suspicious activity, and calls for service.
Detect and deter criminal activity and take appropriate enforcement action when necessary.
Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide first aid, CPR, and AED assistance when needed.
Assist during campus emergencies, severe weather events, evacuations, and other crisis situations.
Support emergency preparedness efforts and help ensure the safety of the university community.
Conduct preliminary investigations and gather information related to incidents and criminal activity.
Maintain accurate reports, daily logs, and incident documentation.
Assist with follow-up investigations as directed.
Provide assistance to students, employees, and visitors.
Enforce university parking regulations and assist motorists as needed.
Direct traffic during special events and emergencies.
Foster positive relationships through professionalism, visibility, and customer service.
Participate in required training programs, including:
First Aid/CPR/AED
Firearms certification
OC Spray and Baton certification
Active Shooter Response
De-escalation techniques
Other department-required training
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to obtain and maintain:
Metro Security License
Firearms certification
OC Spray certification
ASP Baton certification
Handcuff certification
First Aid, CPR, and AED certification
Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Understanding of security and law enforcement practices, preferably within a higher education environment.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Strong organizational and report-writing skills.
Commitment to professionalism, integrity, and service.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and serve a diverse campus community.
Prior law enforcement, military, campus safety, security, or emergency response experience.
Experience working in a higher education environment.
Familiarity with security technologies such as CCTV, access control systems, and ID card systems.
Public Safety Officers serve in a dynamic environment and must be prepared to respond to a wide range of situations, including:
Medical emergencies
Fire and life-safety incidents
Severe weather events
Hazardous materials incidents
Campus emergencies and critical incidents
Additional requirements include:
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 45 pounds
Ability to perform foot patrols and operate a patrol vehicle
Ability to provide CPR and first aid without assistance
Availability to work evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, holidays, and other assigned schedules
Because Public Safety Officers provide critical campus coverage during periods when many university offices are closed, Maryville offers paid Replacement Holidays in addition to vacation and sick leave. Replacement Holidays are provided to recognize coverage requirements during university-observed holidays and breaks, helping ensure officers receive equitable paid time off comparable to that of other university employees.

Skills Required
