Position Title: Public Relations Director

Location: Remote

Reports to: Chief Communications Officer 

Hours per week (average): 40

Overtime Status: Exempt

 

Position Summary

The Public Relations Director will grow the Executive Director’s media presence - with a particular focus on earned media and Substack - to advance the organization’s national reputation. Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer and working closely with the Communications Director, this role is responsible for garnering media coverage, podium opportunities, and developing and implementing an owned media plan for the Executive Director as a strategic complement to the organization’s owned media channels. The ideal candidate can write a persuasive pitch, ensure talking points are compelling, and maximize the impact of media/public appearances. This position is part of a Leadership Team that is responsible for departmental strategy and budgets, and requires exceptional writing skills.

 

Responsibilities and Tasks 

  • Media relations
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive media strategy to enhance the organization’s and Executive Director’s reputation and public image
    • Serve as an “on background” spokesperson for the organization 
    • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, media outlets, influencers, and key stakeholders to secure positive media coverage (to include pitching stories, writing op-eds, and responding to media inquiries)
    • Monitor media coverage, public opinion, and industry trends to adapt PR strategies as needed
    • Oversee the development and implementation of strategies to address negative publicity and brand risks
  • Owned media management for Executive Director
    • Manage and grow owned media presence of the Executive Director, with a particular focus on Substack
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive podium strategy at high profile conferences and events to enhance the organization’s and Executive Director’s reputation and public image
    • Write content and identify multimedia opportunities across channels
    • Content review and source checks for accuracy of all talking points and written communication used by the Executive Director
    • Work collaboratively with the Communications Director to ensure consistency of messaging and cross-promotion with organization’s owned media 
  • All employees of Hopewell Fund are required to complete timesheets every two weeks
  • Perform other duties as needed
 

Required Qualifications, Education, and Experience

  • At least eight years experience working in public relations and/or communications and/or electoral campaigns
  • Demonstrated experience with media relations, including ability to build and maintain relationships with media outlets, influencers, and industry leaders
  • Experience in crisis management and handling sensitive communications
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US. We are not able to sponsor visas at this time.
     

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to turn complex research reports into concise talking points
  • Strong message instincts and a demonstrated commitment to message and brand discipline
  • Excellent copy editing, proofreading, and fact checking skills
  • Strong visual and verbal storytelling abilities, including with data visualization
  • Ability to stay calm and on message in stressful situations 
  • Strong knowledge of Substack, media channels, and fluency with social media platforms 
  • Proficiency in and/or the ability to independently master G Suite and Asana
  • Ability to travel as needed (typically, 2-4 times/year)
 

Valued and Non-Essential Characteristics

  • Proficiency in and/or the ability to independently master WordPress and EveryAction
  • Experience with video production tools
  • Data analytics and search optimization skills
 

Compensation & Benefits

The starting salary range for this position is $128,000-143,000. Placement within this band will be determined based on years of prior experience and relevant skills. Galvanize USA also offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in the 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.
