Under the direction of a licensed psychologist, provides assessment, therapy and intervention to children, adults and their families. Performs related duties as required in the internship training manual. Incumbents in this class series provide similar patient services. Clinical Psychology Predoctoral Intern is the entry-level class. Interns, under functional supervision of a licensed psychologist, obtain the necessary experience toward completion of doctoral degrees in psychology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Master’s degree in psychology

2. Must obtain gold card from the state of West Virginia prior to start date of July 1

3. Must be accepted into the Predoctoral Internship offered at University Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned.

1. Provides comprehensive assessment, treatment planning, treatment and case management to seriously and persistently mentally ill adults and emotionally disturbed children with co-existing alcohol and drug abuse disorders; documents clinical activity; presents diagnostic and interview findings, clinical evaluations, and recommendations for treatment and rehabilitation of patients; consults with physicians and psychiatrists about findings of medical or physical examinations and the need for further special testing or treatment; selects, administers, and evaluates psychological testing.

2. Conducts structured rehabilitation and impairment/symptom focused groups, family education and support groups; and provides field evaluations, treatment, and case management as needed.

3. Evaluates patients for suicide and violence risks; conducts assessments for involuntary hospitalization; provides crisis intervention services in the field or in the office; appears in court regarding recommendations, reports, and contested actions.

4. Participates in quality assurance programs and in interdisciplinary-team reviews of staff clinical activity.

5. Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with other agencies.

6. Knowledge of: psychopathology; rehabilitation of seriously and persistently mentally ill adults and/or emotionally disturbed children; administration and interpretation of psychological tests; computer-assisted psychological tests; assessment and treatment intervention appropriate with the seriously and persistently mentally ill or emotionally disturbed patients; crisis intervention; community resources available for clients.

7. Read and interpret best practices and research practices for services and program evaluation.

8. Work collaboratively with staff of various disciplines and with partner agencies.

9. Write accurate and comprehensive assessments and reports with clarity and precision.

10. Conduct various types of group therapies.

11. Conduct clinical interviews and draw treatment inferences.

12. Work effectively with patients, and their families.

1. Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK – exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).

2. Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 11-12 hour shift.

3. Able to lift 40 pounds from floor to waist

4. Able to ambulate, position, turn and pull up self-assisting adult patients.

1. This position may require unsupervised access to restricted areas that many contain medications, supplies and patient confidential information

2. May be scheduled to work various shifts based on departmental and patient needs.

3. May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.  Work may be performed in acute hospital setting, the skilled nursing and rehabilitation unit, home care or other outpatient department.

4. May be exposed to traumatic situations including psychiatric crisis, physical injuries, and death

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Able to answer telephones and transcribe messages

2. Able to use a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse

3. Able to communicate verbally, written and electronically with healthcare personnel, families, and patients
