This is a Part Time (5 hrs per week) position and must be on-site.

 

The Psychiatrist provides comprehensive mental health care to patients in a correctional setting, including psychiatric evaluations, diagnoses, treatment planning, and medication management. This role collaborates with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure integrated, evidence-based care. The Psychiatrist will maintain accurate medical records, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and support the overall mental health program within the facility. 

How YOU can Make an Impact:

  • Provide high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care to inmates.

  • Provide psychiatric crisis intervention for inmates experiencing acute mental health episodes or emotional distress. Ensure timely and effective treatment to manage self-harm risks, suicidal ideation, and aggressive behaviors. 

  • Work closely with other healthcare professionals and correctional staff, to ensure coordinated care for patients with complex mental health and medical needs. 

  • Provide mental health education to inmates, correctional staff, and other medical personnel, to help reduce stigma of mental health treatment and improve understanding of psychiatric disorders.

  • Document promptly and properly.

  • Provide specialized care for inmates with mental health conditions, including those with co-occurring substance use disorders, traumatic brain injuries, or histories of abuse. Address the mental health needs of high-risk or vulnerable populations such as those in segregation or those with suicidal ideation. 

  • Conduct regular risk assessments for suicidal ideation, violent behavior, and other potential threats to inmate or staff safety. Recommendation protocols for safety and initiate involuntary treatment as necessary. 

  • Uphold the highest standards of psychiatric practice, including ensuring informed consent for treatment, respecting patient confidentiality, and adhering to ethical guidelines set forth by psychiatric governing bodies. 

  • Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts, including audits, reviews, and feedback to improve patient care and ensure compliance with mental health laws, regulations, and facility standards. 

  • Provide supervision and/or collaboration to Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioners where needed.

  • Participate in training and educational initiatives for correctional staff, helping them recognize signs of mental illness and understand how to appropriately interact with inmates with mental health issues. 

  • Provide Call-by-Phone coverage as needed, including after-hours psychiatric care for inmates experiencing psychiatric crises or severe distress. 


What we Ask of YOU:

  • A current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Washington.

  • Board Certified preferred; Board Eligible welcomed. Must have completed an accredited Residency in Psychiatry. 

  • A current, valid DEA Registration, or be willing to obtain Registration. 

  • At least 3-5 years of clinical practice; plus, 1-2 years in correctional healthcare; clinical rotations in Residency/Fellowships count to satisfy this requirement. 

  • Experience in diagnosis, treatment planning, and providing healthcare services in a managed care or correctional facility setting is highly preferred. 

  • Active CPR/BLS certificate required prior to Start Date (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved).

Skills Required

  • Current, valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in Washington State
  • Completion of an accredited Psychiatry residency
  • Board certification in Psychiatry
  • Board eligibility in Psychiatry
  • Current valid DEA Registration or willingness to obtain one
  • At least 3–5 years of clinical practice
  • 1–2 years of correctional healthcare experience; residency or fellowship rotations may count
  • Experience with psychiatric diagnosis, treatment planning, and managed care or correctional facility healthcare
  • Active CPR/BLS certificate before the start date, approved by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Ability to work on-site 5 hours per week
