Job Summary:

The Psychiatric Hospitalization Coordinator position operates under State Legislature DHS 34. The position is responsible for providing a wide array of culturally sensitive, recovery orientated, trauma sensitive, direct clinical services including assessment, counseling, supportive contacts, and referrals working with individuals and families across their lifespan.

 

The Psychiatric Hospitalization Coordinator works closely/proactively with Crisis Workers and multiple community partners for assistance in monitoring all involuntary hospital and institute placements to ensure a timely discharge to the least restrictive setting.  This position is generally first shift (Monday – Friday) 8 am – 4:30 pm) and requires occasional evening coverage.  The Psychiatric Hospitalization Coordinator reports directly to the assigned supervisor with overall program supervision provided by the Director of Emergency Services.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provision of Clinical Services (high responsibility 80% effort)
  • Performs accurate assessments to evaluate and diagnose mental health and/or co-occurring issues in a culturally sensitive, recovery oriented, trauma sensitive manner by providing assessments within the context of the client’s perspectives and beliefs
  • Provides a range of clinical services including level of care assessment, service coordination, support and referrals in a context that is supportive of the consumer’s culture, values and perspectives
  • Completes accurate clinical records including intakes, assessments, progress notes, discharge summaries and other information in a timely manner.
  • Works collaboratively with other community agencies to develop and maintain a continuum of care and maintain efficient use of community services.
  • Provides consultation and support related to areas of specialization
  • Attends team meetings and presents consumer cultural and clinical information
  • Maintains minimum direct and case management service hour expectations
  • Works collaboratively with team members and takes a leadership role in service planning
  • Program and JMHC Participation (high responsibility, 20% effort)
  • Attends staff meetings, in-service and other program activities as requested
  • Participates in JMHC committees, trainings and activities as directed and/or approved
  • Provides consultation to other JMHC programs as necessary

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

 

Education/Licensure

ESSENTIAL:

  • DHS 34.21 (3)(b)8 Master’s level clinicians shall be persons with a master’s degree and coursework in areas directly related to providing mental health services, including clinical psychology, psychology, school or educational psychology, rehabilitation psychology, counseling and guidance or counseling psychology.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license, a favorable driving record, adequate insurance (per state law), and access to a vehicle. 

PREFERRED

  • Licensure as a Substance Abuse Counselor in Training, Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor or Substance Abuse Counselor. 

Experience

ESSENTIAL:

  • Experience in related behavioral health field
  • Commitment to work toward improving cultural sensitivity as demonstrated by valuing diversity, recognizing personal limitations and having the desire to improve
  • Strong commitment to principles of recovery and to facilitating consumer participation in treatment/service planning or provision
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the use of evidence-based practices for treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders
  • Experience in community-based mental health and co-occurring assessments, case management, treatment planning and crisis resolution
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing)
  • Ability to work effectively with an interdisciplinary team with a positive and creative attitude
  • Ability to work independently and remain organized and efficient
  • Superior ethics and interpersonal boundaries as evidenced by experience in community-based work with related professional references

PREFERRED:

  • Bi-lingual, and/or bi-cultural (Spanish/Hmong/Cambodian)
  • Fluent in American Sign Language

ESSENTIAL:

Requires driving, sitting, standing, light lifting, bending, and reaching; and the ability to use and operate standard office equipment, including computer, calculator, phone, printer, cell phone, facsimile, etc.

 

Working Conditions

  • Shared office in a clinical setting that promotes communication with colleagues. Staff provide part of services in the community, not limited to homes, treatment centers, and participants' place of employment. The regular work week is Monday through Friday with scheduling flexibility to meet staff and program needs. Accommodations are available upon request.
  • Population Served: JMHC consumers have a wide array of different backgrounds and experiences. Staff is expected to be comfortable working with Individuals with the following.

  • Varied Levels of Engagement in Services 

Training Requirements:

  • Orientation training requirement. DHS 31.21(8)(b)
  1. Each newly hired staff person who has had less than 6 months of experience in providing emergency mental health services shall complete a minimum of 40 hours of documented orientation training within 3 months after beginning work with the program.
  2. Each newly hired staff person who has had 6 months or more of prior experience in providing emergency mental health service shall complete a minimum of 20 hours of documented orientation training within 3 months after beginning work with the program.
  3. Each volunteer shall receive at least 40 hours of orientation training before working directly with clients or their families.

 

Ongoing training requirement:

  1. Each professional staff person shall participate in at least the required number of hours of annual documented training necessary to retain certification or licensure.
  2. Staff shall receive at least 8 hours per year of Inservice training on emergency mental health services, rules and procedures relevant to the operation of the program, compliance with state and federal regulations, cultural competency in mental health services and current issues in client’s rights and services.

Hiring Process:

All potential candidates will need to successfully pass the Background Information Disclosure (BID) for entity employees and contractors.  Wisconsin’s Caregivers Law requires background, and criminal checks are required by the Department of Health Services and Wis. Stat. 50.065(6)(c) and Wis. Admin Code § DHS 12.05(4)
