As a member of the Behavioral Health Intake team, the Psychiatric Crisis Specialist will be responsible for the throughput of behavioral health patients within participating in Cleveland Clinic Emergency Departments and hospitals. In this role, the Psychiatric Crisis Specialist will help coordinate patient care and placement, support efficient patient flow and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure patients receive appropriate behavioral health services. Additionally, you will participate in clinical oversight and provide instructional support to help maintain high standards of patient care and team performance.

We will hire our Psychiatric Crisis Specialist in two different job titles, based on educational background:  

  • Psychiatric Crisis Specialist I

  • Psychiatric Crisis Specialist II

A caregiver in this position works nights from 9:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Complete comprehensive mental status, psychosocial, risk and chemical use assessments to identify patient crisis needs.

  • Participate in ongoing assessments and provide care plan recommendations for patients experiencing extended wait times for disposition.

  • Provide crisis intervention services using therapeutic interventions based on patient-centered outcomes, standards of care, current research and evidence-based practice.

  • Supply information to the medical team to assist with differential diagnosis considerations.

  • Recognize significant changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.

  • Navigate insurance verification for behavioral health patients.

  • Provide psychoeducation to patients’ families, significant others and fellow caregivers regarding behavioral health, de-escalation techniques and related topics to support the current plan of care.

  • Serve as a patient advocate while involving patients, families or designees and current providers in developing individualized plans of care that reflect cultural, religious and educational needs.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and support individualized treatment and discharge plans.

  • Process referred cases to appropriate dispositions, including inpatient placement or coordination of community wraparound services for successful discharge planning.

  • Participate in the clinical instruction and supervision of Psychiatric Crisis Intervention Specialists pursuing independent licensure, as well as student interns completing departmental learning experiences.

  • Maintain integrity in professional charge capture for crisis intervention services and ensure accurate documentation of all services provided.

  • Pursue ongoing education in behavioral health practices and standards.

  • Assist with orientation and training of new Behavioral Health Intake team caregivers and other hospital personnel.

  • Communicate patient plans of care, outcomes and acuity during end-of-shift reports.

  • Perform routine administrative and office functions to support casework processes.

  • Incorporate informatics tools, principles and practices into the safe and effective delivery of care.

  • Promote patient safety goals and contribute to a positive, collaborative work environment.

  • Complete all required documentation and records related to patient care.

Psychiatric Crisis Specialist I

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • BA, BS, MA or MS in a healthcare profession OR MEd, RN, MA or MS.  

  • Licensed Social Worker (LSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor III (LCDC-III) or Registered Nurse (RN).  

  • Two years of work experience OR two years of an internship in a clinical setting. 

  • Competency of patient populations (child/adolescent, adult, geriatric), diversity, social determinants of health, community resources, Ohio Revised Code, DSM/ICD, mental illness, chemical use/abuse, basic medical clearance, healthcare law and other competencies as assigned

  • Possession of resources for all communities and counties served by Cleveland Clinic facilities

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervisory Designation (LISW-S), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervisory Designation (LPCC-S)

Psychiatric Crisis Specialist II

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • MA, MS, in a healthcare profession, or an MEd 

  • Licensed Independent Social Worker [LISW], or Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervisory Designation [LISW-S], or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor [LPCC], or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervisory Designation [LPCC-S]

  • Competency of patient populations [child/adolescent, adult, geriatric], diversity, social determinants of health, community resources, Ohio Revised Code, DSM/ICD, mental illness, chemical use/abuse, basic medical clearance, healthcare law, other competencies

  • Possession of resources for all communities and counties served by Cleveland Clinic facilities

  • Two years of work experience post Master’s Degree

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Licensed Independent Social Worker [LISW] certification, Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervisory Designation [LISW-S] certification, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor [LPCC] certification, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervisory Designation [LPCC-S] certification

*The compensation range provided corresponds to the Psychiatric Crisis Specialist I or II position. Individual pay rates may vary depending on Education Background and Relevant Experience* 

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires Corrected hearing and vision to normal range

  • Some positions may be more sedentary work

  • Some positions may be more light work

  • Require full range of motion, eye-hand coordination

  • Require standing or walking for extensive periods of time

  • Require some exposure to communicable disease or bodily fluids

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
