Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Propulsion Engineering Manager 2 for our product design engineering group. This position is located at the Palm Beach Gardens, Florida facility and will report to the senior manager of engineering.  The product design engineering manager will be responsible for managing a staff of approximately 10-15 engineers supporting development programs within the Advanced Propulsion & Systems (AP&S) market area. This market area is primarily focused on scramjet and ramjet propulsion systems for high-speed applications along with related testing and technology activities.

The Northrop Grumman PS&C business unit is based in Elkton, Maryland and began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton PS&C facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of Government and commercial customers. The Palm Beach Gardens location is the Air-breathing propulsion center of excellence specializing in the design, analysis and system integration of ramjets, scramjets and other advanced air-breathing propulsion systems.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage a group of approximately 10-15 project and design engineers supporting multiple development programs. 
  • Ensure that the technical approaches, designs, and technical plans meet the program or proposal requirements, objectives, and cost/schedule constraints. 
  • Actively manage direct reports in areas such as safety, job expectations, career goals, mentoring/coaching, and strategy deployment.
  • Ensure staff receive the appropriate training and skill development opportunities to be successful in their roles.
  • Provide continual feedback with respect to individual performance. 
  • Additional specific expectations include:
    • Plan, prioritize, allocate and manage resources to meet program staffing and department needs.
    • Utilize development plans, stretch assignments, 1:1 feedback, coaching/mentoring, training, recognition, promotion/equity, and other tools to develop and reward our engineering talent.
    • Ensure that engineering, program management, and other functional departments are aligned with program/proposal goals and technical and programmatic approaches.
    • Apply sound engineering principles and ensure compliance with NGDS processes and standards.
    • Take a leadership role in solving significant engineering issues. Work with lead/chief engineers, develop plans to resolve issues, communicate plans, ensure appropriate technical resources are applied, and advise senior management on progress.
    • Use appropriate metrics to monitor engineering performance and drive data-based decision making.
    • Pursue improvement initiatives related to engineering processes and procedures, including audits and training.

Success in this role will reflect extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in successful proposal, design, and development of jet engine or high-speed propulsion systems.
  • BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or related science field.
  • Strong technical background in propulsion systems, technical risk assessment, technical planning, and program execution is required.
  • Strong experience in drawing and model review, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). 
  • Must be a self-starter and possess the skills necessary to lead and motivate others, achieving results in a timely manner.
  • Excellent oral, presentation and written communication to all levels of an organization.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Ability to make presentations for executive leadership and demonstrate fact-based decision-making skills.
  • Ability to obtain DoD Secret Clearance, which US citizenship is required.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 10-25%.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • History of team leadership or resource management.
  • MS or higher degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or related science field.
  • History with high-speed or hypersonic systems and related test events and activities.
  • Familiarity with engineering quality, and manufacturing processes/procedures including design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA).
  • Demonstrated process improvement experience and knowledge.
  • Ability to understand and work with multiple enterprise-wide systems.
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance.

Primary Level Salary Range: $146,500.00 - $219,700.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
