The Hatcher Group seeks a super-sharp proposal writer to support our business development efforts. The candidate will develop proposals and respond to our partner agencies’ data calls for federal, nonprofit, and commercial clients. We need a smart, organized, obsessively conscientious team player with at least four years’ experience in responding to federal or commercial RFPs, preferably on behalf of a professional services firm. Working closely with Hatcher’s Business Development team and subject matter experts, the candidate will produce capability statements, proposal content, pricing/staffing charts, and past performance summaries that align with pitch presentations and response strategies.
In addition to supporting the development of well-written and beautifully designed proposals, the ideal candidate will play a critical role in many different internal and external facing projects. This includes building a library of our core capability write-ups, maintaining the integrity of our proposal development process, facilitating lessons learned sessions and after-action reports, and being readily available to support quick turnaround memos and ad hoc content requests.
The successful candidate will join a fun and hard-working team and work closely with Hatcher leadership across our five sectors, including Education, Environment, Equity & Opportunity, Public health, and Government. In this role, you will have an opportunity to learn from and engage with diverse and talented teams, including our accomplished designers, top-notch event planners, skilled video and radio producers, digital media experts, and seasoned strategic communication specialists. Successful collaboration with this wide range of professionals demands a perfectionist with brains, initiative, total reliability, great people skills, and a good sense of humor. The selected candidate will also be expected to contribute positively to a team environment rooted in the firm’s core values, upholding our community guidelines.
At Hatcher, we are proud to maintain a 'flexible first' work culture. Candidates must live within a reasonable commuting distance to our Bethesda office for weekly in-person collaboration. The target salary range for this position is $80,000 - $100,000 annually, commensurate with experience and internal equity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in proposal development process steps from a go/no-go decision through outlining, writing, and gathering content, and submission.
  • Identify and communicate resource needs for proposals and capability statements.
  • Support the development of win themes and differentiators during brainstorming sessions.
  • Identify, gather, and tailor existing copy or write new copy to respond to the requirements of prospective partner agencies, memos, RFIs, and RFPs.
  • Update and track proposal language, case studies, resumes, and past performance.
  • Assist in vetting opportunities, evaluating solicitation requirements, and providing competitive research.
  • Generate, track, review, and follow up on data calls for internal and subcontractor teammates.
  • Collaborate with our design team to create proposal graphics, covers, charts, tables, and process diagrams.
  • Support positive team building and assist in business development activities.
  • Maintain the accuracy of information across our proposal tracking tools through Monday.com and Box.
  • Support lessons learned processes and after-action reports by interviewing team members on successful or unsuccessful strategies and make recommendations for improvement.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years of related proposal development experience.
  • Excellent writing skills and expertise in copyediting, and the ability to understand and communicate concepts in a compelling persuasive manner.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to juggle multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to work directly with internal clients and manage projects in collaboration with others.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
  • Flexibility to quickly adapt when “pop up” and other high-priority needs that cause priorities to change.
  • Experience working under pressure with deadlines is critical.
