Manage the project engineering and detailed design phase and manage engineering services during the project life cycle for designated projects within the Generation Major Projects organization. Projects managed by this organization typically range from ~$10M to over $500M in total spend. This team performs large and or complex projects or engineering studies for NIPSCO which includes projects supporting electric generation, electric transmission, environmental remediation, and other scopes of work of larger size or with higher complexity. Projects are typically first of their kind for NIPSCO and almost always multi-year.

Apply engineering project management during the project life cycle including project initiation / conceptual engineering, engineering planning, detailed design and drawing submittal, constructability reviews, change control, product testing and acceptance, transition of the product or service to the internal customer and ensure optimum product performance.

Manage the development of the engineered product (product scope) and decomposition into a constructible project scope solution while achieving the integrated project objectives. Ensures the elaboration of product scope via best engineering practices and industry standards into specifications that translates into effective project scope definition, integration and organization (WBS), and associated validation and control. Manages and ensures product quality through engineering contractor / Architectural Engineer (AE) performance is maintained. Applies effective product risk management competence into the design packages and drawings.

Apply engineering and project management capability and competence utilizing engineering standards and best practice application to ensure optimum NIPSCO rate of return on its product investments

Integrate and manage both internal and external stakeholders, operations, AE’s, Subject Matter Experts (SME’s), etc. to ensure the highest project success rate. Effectively communicate and disseminate relevant engineering status, work performance information, and other pertinent project information to the project management team, project team, and impacted product stakeholders. Provide proactive environment for design optimization.

Selection and utilize optimum engineering tools and techniques; engineering planning, engineering performance, engineering monitoring and control, quality testing, inspection and measurement. Integrate the use of project management tools, techniques, and information management systems to the project and its contractors in order to advance the product, effectively communicate, report, and control engineering performance.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

PROJECT ENGINEER I

  • Promotes and assures safe working environment
  • Understanding of basic engineering/technical theories and principles
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching technical design issues
  • Ability to evaluate options and risks and then preparing and presenting those recommendations to the project manager
  • Ability to read/interpret drawings/standards and assist in analyzing/solving problems
  • Ability to perform duties under close supervision
  • Develops, reviews or prepares reports on complex technical subjects clearly, concisely and effectively, in a manner suitable for presentation to management, professional societies, regulatory bodies, etc.
  • Ability to work closely with contractors to review project scope and obtain a proposal
  • Utilize PMI and PMBOK standards to ensure project execution is aligned with the group’s project management guidelines and processes
  • Works closely with the Project Manager and project controls team to manage various aspects of the project’s schedule and cost
  • Manages the outside engineering firm to ensure scope, schedule, cost, and quality is maintained at all times
  • Coordinates and reviews all relevant project documents and drawings with internal stakeholders
  • Works with engineering firms to provide engineering solutions that effectively meet the project’s goals and objectives, while still adhering to the financial goals of the Company and maintain projects within budgetary constraints
  • Works a flexible schedule, including overtime, as needed to meet project goals and objectives
  • Provide cost effective solutions and follow through to provide resolution as issues arise
  • Develop and maintain applicable project Request for Information (RFI) logs

PROJECT ENGINEER II

  • Promotes and assures safe working environment
  • All of the qualifications for a Project Engineer I including:
  • Increased understanding of basic engineering/technical theories and principles.
  • Increased understanding of basic practices of researching technical design issues
  • Increased ability to evaluate options and risks and make sound recommendations to both the project manager and senior management
  • Demonstrates competency in analytical techniques necessary to handle assignments of moderate complexity. (e.g., by dividing the problem into component steps, and performing the analysis necessary to complete each step.)
  • Exhibits ability to understand interrelationship between systems and component equipment
  • Ability to initiate corrective action when project objectives are not being met
  • Enhanced understanding of project management principles
  • Enhanced ability to effectively manage project risk
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal direction from higher-level employees

Required Qualifications for Position

  • Graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering OR Engineering Technology
  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in an electric utility environment
  • Knowledge of applicable computer applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various backgrounds
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Function as a an active team member and contributor
  • Ability to plan safety into a comprehensive work scope and/or plan
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions, such climbing to elevated platforms and in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lead and facilitate meetings effectively
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to travel to support project goals and objectives

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

  • Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology four year degree with experience with Electric Transmission and Distribution Systems
  • Ability to apply basic principles of project management
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification
  • Working knowledge on how the dependency of interrelated activities within a project schedule function
  • Knowledge of the processes associated with Fossil Power, Hydro Power, and/or Renewables

Compensation:

$65,900 - $116,200

Salary Range:

$65,900.00 - $136,600.00
