Your Opportunity as the Project Engineer
The Project Engineer role will lead the execution of projects related to food safety. Primary responsibilities include developing scopes of work, user requirements, project plans, budgets, and cost controls.
Location: Decatur, AL plant
Work Arrangements: 100% on-site
- Willingness to work off shift (including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays) and flow to the work as needed
Reports to: Plant Engineer
In this role you will:
- Writes project charters and funding requests
- Ensures that all phases of the Capital Project Delivery process such as Front-End Engineering and Start Up Management are followed
- Leads the development of project cost estimates and manages projects to meet the estimates 80% of the time
- Develops and manages project schedules to meet project objectives 95% of the time; this includes coordinating and monitoring schedule updates in conjunction with engineering and construction resources
- Establishes project practices and procedures including ones related to safety, quality, cost, and schedule
- Manages project changes and the decision-making process
- Drives resolution of key technical issues within the team; ensures all Smucker engineering and code requirements are met
- Clearly communicates project status, outages and watch-outs as the primary link between the project team and upper management
- Understands key roles of Smucker employees and contractors and can mesh the two for a seamless project execution
- Can lead a multidisciplinary team of Engineers to successfully execute a project
- Works with operations and product development to determine internal customer needs
- Provides technical support to Project Managers in the areas of project controls, budget, and accounting systems
- Ensures that projects are documented in accordance with good engineering practices
- Support development of engineering instruction (EI) packages for construction. Review EIs for completeness and correctness.
- Monitor project installations for correctness and compliance with JMS standards and policies; Provide direct feedback to engineering firms and contractors to resolve issues promptly in order to minimize impacts to product quality and/or ongoing operation.
- Support the development and execution of CQV plans for relevant projects
- Support startup efforts by aiding the operations team to assemble spare parts, to develop operating procedures and technology transfer and training materials, and to complete operator/maintenance qualifications for relevant projects

What we are looking for:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
- A Minimum of 2 years of experience in project management/construction management
- Strong documentation skills – ability to interpret vendor supplied documentation and create new documents as needed
Additional skills and experience that we think would make someone successful in this role:
- An understanding of the Capital Delivery Process
- Previous experience in a food (human and / or pet) or beverage manufacturing environment
- Are a certified Project Engineer
- Prior contractor management experience
