About the role
You want a role where you’re trusted to run with big work, without the stiff corporate vibe.

In Waihi, we’ve got an exciting project on the horizon in and around a mining environment. We can’t share the full details just yet, but we’re ready to connect with Project Engineers who are keen, available in the next couple of months, and up for something substantial in the earthworks and mining infrastructure space.

You’ll be part of a collaborative, site-based team, leading bulk earthworks and associated civil construction within a live mining context to safely and efficiently hit programme, quality, environmental and cost targets.

You’ll enjoy being out on site, working closely with supervisors, the client and key stakeholders to solve problems in real time and deliver outcomes the community can be proud of.

This is Good Work: relaxed vibe, serious standards. You’ll be backed to make the call, challenge how things are done, and help shape a landmark project for the region.

In this role you will:

  • Lead and coordinate site teams and subcontractors, working alongside other crews to optimise resources and productivity.
  • Plan and sequence the works, developing practical construction methodologies for bulk earthworks and related civil activities in and around mining operations.
  • Own the programme for your area, creating and managing look-aheads and daily plans, and clearly communicating these with the site team.
  • Provide technical advice on earthworks, deep excavations, batter stabilisation, temporary works and pavement subgrade construction, resolving design and on-site engineering issues promptly.
  • Drive a strong safety culture around large earthmoving gear and mining plant, ensuring safety, environmental and quality standards are met through regular inspections and visible leadership.
  • Implement and monitor environmental controls on large earthworks in line with GD05, mining consents and project requirements.
  • Manage budgets and daily cost control, contributing to monthly financial reviews, forecasts and reporting (CCS experience an advantage).
  • Experience with digital tools and modelling (e.g. Trimble Business Centre, CAD, Propellor, GPS systems) to support set-out, volumes, take-offs and planning would be an advantage.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Experience as a Project Engineer (ideally 3+ years in a PE role) on major infrastructure or heavy civil projects; experience on mining or quarry projects would be a strong advantage.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at NZQF Level 7 or above (or equivalent).
  • Strong background in bulk earthworks, with exposure to deep excavations, batter stabilisation, temporary works, shear keys and/or soil nailing, and pavement subgrade construction.
  • Proven experience with programming and planning, including creating and managing programmes for your work area. Experience sequencing works around mining operations, pit access, haul roads or tailings facilities is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated financial management capability, including budget management, cost tracking and monthly financial reviews.
  • Familiarity with GD05 and implementation of environmental controls on large earthworks projects; experience managing sediment and water controls around pits or waste rock facilities is advantageous.
  • Comfortable using modelling and survey technology – Trimble Business Centre preferred; CAD, Propellor and GPS systems (Leica, Topcon, Trimble, Uni-control) all beneficial.
  • A confident communicator who can build strong relationships with field crews, mining operators, supervisors, designers and the client.
  • A collaborative, low-ego approach – you value safety, are proactive and accountable, and you’re keen to keep learning and growing in a complex mining environment.

  • KiwiSaver employer contributions
  • Fuel discount card
  • Parental leave top-up payment with additional return to work support
