Austal USA Advanced Technologies (AT) is a division of Austal USA, a global defense prime contractor and a designer and manufacturer of defense and commercial ships.
Austal USA AT works at the forefront to invent, mature, and implement advanced maritime technologies which enhance operational capacities and improve readiness of our defense systems. Austal USA AT operates a technology hub in Charlottesville VA which works to bring cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to scale and also oversees operation of the U.S. Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM COE) located in Danville, VA. The mission of the AM COE is to operationalize additive manufacturing in the submarine industrial base and provide emergent request support to sustain our Nation’s fleet.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for technical leadership of assigned projects within the programmatic guidelines set by the Program Manager and customer.
- Review statements of work from customer, review technical drawings, and identify applicable MIL-STD or other technical requirements and convey understanding to operations team, Project Coordinator and Program Manager.
- Define, generate and review project technical requirements and documentation with Program Manager, Project Coordinator and customer.
- Assess technical feasibility of the project and identify additional resources which may be needed to fulfill requirements and meet deliverables of customer.
- Determine the relevance of existing, standard requirements and their level of appropriateness for additively manufactured components.
- Monitor the assigned projects and their deliverables to ensure technical work scope are well defined and maintained.
- Oversee and direct the technical work of assigned personnel to related projects.
- Conduct and attend meetings as required.
- Support resolution of engineering, material and planning issues.
- Support implementation of improved engineering processes.
- Provide the coordination between resource managers/supervisors and ensure all necessary reviews and approvals are received.
- Any additional duties as assigned by Operations Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering AND
- Three (3) years’ experience as an engineer in either large ship construction or similar large scale engineering design projects.
- In lieu of Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, High School diploma/GED and ten (10) years of equivalent Engineering experience as defined above.
- Demonstrated knowledge reading NAVSEA or other shipbuilding technical drawings of systems, sub-systems, or sub-system components is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of NAVSEA shipbuilding specifications such as MIL-STDs and other similar specs preferred.
- Experience in identifying and anticipating design/production work sequence conflicts required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:
- The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance may be required if deemed necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities.
