The Position
The Project Director (PD) in agreement with Sterring Committee and under mandate given by the Research & Early Development (R&ED) IPG (Investment Portfolio Group) and/or Novo Nordisk IPG, is accountable for direction and progress of the project(s), including:
- Project management of Construction & other CAPEX projects and/or programs through development, construction and handover phases. Projects can include laboratories, research facilities, offices.
- Proactively managing project cost, scope, time, risk and business impact throughout the project lifecycle
- Organizing and leading multi-disciplinary project teams to ensure the successful completion of all project deliverables through development, construction and handover
- Monitoring project progress, providing regular reports to senior management and mitigating risks
Relationships
Reports to R&ED Investments Director.
Internal & External Stakeholders include: SVP, EVP, CVPs, VPs, Directors, Managers, Team leaders, Professionals, Lab/tech, and skilled workers in departments involved in projects. Other support organization like Quality, IT, procurement, HR, Legal/Regulatory, etc.
Project Director will be managing a team(s) of varying number of NN and external employees withing project organization, depending on the needs of the project.
Essential Functions
- Typically leads major Construction, Lab Fit-Outs, Rebuilds or other CAPEX project(s) or programme(s) with large Total Project Cost (TPC), high complexity & high strategic impact. Typically leads and influences cross-organizationally, cross-functionally, and cross-regionally initiatives and change that creates positive, broad enterprise impact. Acts as role model and mentor for colleagues in R&ED Investment and strategic sparring partner for R&ED Director.
- Project management of CAPEX Investment projects through development, execution and handover phases in accordance with Novo Nordisk PEM (Project Execution Model), IPG (Investment Portfolio Group) Governance, local US regulations, and other Novo Nordisk compliance requirements
- Stakeholder Management and Communication
- Proactively manage project cost/scope/time/risks/business impact throughout project lifecycle.
- Perform project procurement management, incl. drive all necessary processes to acquire products, services or results needed from outside the project team to perform the work.
- Ensure high focus on Health, Safety and Environment throughout project lifecycle (for internals & externals). Secure continuous compliance to the latest Novo Nordisk and local HSE requirements.
- Develop strategic "win-win" solutions. Identify synergies & alignment with other functions.
- Perform cost management incl. estimating, budgeting, and controlling project costs, so that project can be completed within the approved budget/mandate. Monitor the project status to update project costs and manage changes to the cost baseline.
- Perform risk management, incl. conducting risk management planning, identification, analysis, response, monitoring & control. Proactively mitigate project risks.
- Build fit-for-purpose project organization incl. cross-functional, cross-regional teams. Secure the right skills and competences are available in the project team. Close capability gaps.
- Manage activities with focus on the means of meeting project objectives incl. establishing effective processes, planning, coordination, prioritization of work, measuring, monitoring etc.
- Leads with focus on people incl. influencing, motivating, listening, enabling, etc. Create a collaborative team environment and enable Novo Nordisk way of working.
- Skilled at translate business requirements to technical requirements.
- Help R&ED Investments Director drive continuous development of project management function in accordance with best practices and ever evolving business need.
Physical Requirements
Approximately 0 - 10% overnight travel. Ability to lift 0-50 lbs. Ability to work in an open office environment with the possibility of frequent distraction. Must be local to the Lexington, MA office. Relocation not provided.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree with 10 or more years of relevant work experience.
- Minimum of 6 years of project management experience leading cross-functional (and perhaps global) projects.
- Has typically led several major CAPEX construction or rebuild projects. Experience in building laboratories & lab fit outs of leased buildings is an advantage.
- Typically holds experience from pharma or other regulated industries (food, life science, energy, etc).
- Typically holds experience from both development, construction and hand-over phases.
- Skilled at driving project in highly complex stakeholder set-ups
- Skilled in advising and influencing at high leadership levels, and drive project to success despite conflicting interests.
- Persuasive and effective communicator, with strong Negotiation skills. Skilled at creating win-win situations.
- Pragmatic, constructive, perseverant. Able to lead through crisis and in situations of high pressure.
- Proactive & has strong focus on results, QHSE, timeliness and cost.
