The Project Controls Consultant will support the planning, monitoring, and control of rail infrastructure projects to ensure effective delivery against schedule, cost, and performance targets.
The role involves providing project controls expertise across key disciplines including planning & scheduling, cost control, risk management, and performance reporting. The consultant will work closely with project teams and stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered efficiently and with clear visibility of risks and progress.
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Scheduling
Support the development and maintenance of integrated project schedules using tools such as Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project.
Assist in building logic-linked programmes covering design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
Monitor programme progress and highlight potential delays or schedule risks.
Conduct critical path analysis and identify mitigation strategies.
Cost Management
Support cost monitoring activities including:
Budget tracking
Cost forecasting
Variance analysis
Assist in maintaining project cost reports and performance dashboards.
Contribute to financial performance reviews and cost control processes.
Risk & Change Management
Support the management of project risks and opportunities.
Maintain risk registers and track mitigation actions.
Assist in assessing the programme and cost impact of changes.
Support change control processes in line with project governance.
Performance Reporting
Prepare regular project controls reports summarising schedule, cost, and risk performance.
Support production of project dashboards and KPIs.
Provide programme narratives and progress summaries for senior stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement
Work closely with Project Managers, Planning Teams, Commercial Teams, and Engineers.
Support planning workshops and progress meetings.
Ensure project controls information is accurate, timely, and aligned across the project team.
Rail Environment Awareness
Ensure project controls activities consider rail-specific requirements including:
Possession planning
Access constraints
Safety requirements
Integration with operational railway activities.

Required Skills & Experience
Essential
Experience working in project controls or project planning within the rail sector.
Understanding of project controls principles (planning, cost, risk, reporting).
Experience with Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.
Ability to analyse project performance data.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
