The Role
Provide nutrition risk assessment, prescribe supplemental food, and deliver individual/group nutrition and breastfeeding counseling for WIC participants. Supervise clinic operations, develop lesson plans and education materials, make referrals, and support multicultural clientele across the service area.

The program nutritionist will be responsible for determining participants nutritional risk and needs, will prescribe supplemental food and provide individual/group counseling to WIC program participants. Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training and other professional and staff development activities. Supervises clinic operations including but not limited to high risk counseling; development of lesson plans and special activities. Assists in organizing and maintaining of general nutrition education materials and displays in the WIC clinics such as bulletin boards, pamphlets, food displays, etc. Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multi-cultural clientele.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Will explain reason for certification and risk factors

Will discuss dangers of smoking/drug use/ alcohol use

Will give Nutrition education

Will offer breastfeeding information to pregnant and those currently breastfeeding

Will discuss recall/diet assessment

Will make appropriate referrals

Will explain what foods to buy, when to spend checks and where to spend checks

Will explain the food list

Education requirements: BS in Foods and Nutrition, community nutrition, or Dietetics. Verification of IV/V or DPD from ADA preferred.

Able to serve multi-lingual clientele and /staff. Travel within Gateway CAP service area is required. Applicants must work well independently, and with the team. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Foods and Nutrition, Community Nutrition, or Dietetics
  • Verification of IV/V or DPD from ADA
  • Ability to provide individual and group nutrition counseling and assess nutritional risk
  • Provide breastfeeding education and discuss smoking/drug/alcohol dangers
  • Ability to serve multi-lingual clientele and staff
  • Willingness to travel within Gateway CAP service area
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, multicultural environment
