About the Opportunity
Job SummaryUnder the direction of the Director of the Mills College Art Museum at Northeastern University, the Program Director is responsible for developing and managing digital and on-site public and academic engagement programs, publicity and communications, visitor experience, exhibition materials, documentation, publication production, contracts and accounts payable administration, and hiring, training, and supervising student employees.
Minimum Qualifications- 5 years of experience creating public programs and outreach in an art museum setting
- BA in Art History, Studio Art, or related field, MA preferred
- Experience working in an academic setting with students preferred
- Knowledge of publicity procedures and appropriate media outlets
- Knowledge of processes for graphic design and publication production
- Knowledge of social media and digital platforms (Instagram, Facebook, WordPress, Loomly, Medium, etc.)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Photoshop, PowerPoint, Canva, InDesign or equivalent imaging and graphic design software
Public Engagement:
- Conceptualize and manage in-person and digital public events such as opening receptions, artist panels, presentations, performances, and artist-led workshops, including developing content, working directly with visiting artists and speakers, processing contracts and honoraria, overseeing hospitality, and managing staffing and audio/visual needs.
- Manage visitor experience, including accessibility needs, digital tours, surveys, ensuring multiple entry points of engagement.
Academic Engagement:
- Work closely with faculty to develop curriculum-specific student opportunities, including exhibition tours, collection visits, research, publishing, and archival projects.
- Maintain a faculty advisory committee with regular semester meetings.
- Develop digital opportunities to engage faculty and classes across Northeastern's global network
Publicity and Communications:
- Oversee publicity and public relations for Art Museum exhibitions, programs, publications, and events, including writing press releases, posting on-line event listings, contacting press, creating email announcements, and managing the museum’s mailing lists and digital marketing platforms, including social media and digital advertising partnerships.
- Update and maintain the museum’s website.
- Direct creative strategy and manage content and publishing schedule for the museum’s social media and digital content platforms, including the museum’s Bloomberg Connects digital guide and Medium blog Glass Cube.
- Work with a contract graphic designer to develop printed and online materials for exhibitions, including signage, announcements, distribution, brochures, posters, etc.
- Oversee the production of printed and digital publications related to the museum’s exhibitions and collection, including copy editing, securing images, coordinating with authors.
Student Employees:
- Hire, train, and supervise student employees, including gallery assistants and publicity assistants and work with Co-op students.
Administrative:
- Process and track contracts, invoices, honoraria, catalog sales, and other payments; reconcile credit card.
- Schedule and maintain photographic/video documentation of exhibitions and events.
- Manage exhibition scheduling for Slidespace.
- Respond to telephone and email queries regarding exhibitions, programs, and researchers.
