The Production Manager – Column Packing is responsible for one or more production units, totaling 20-40 people, under the direction of the Director of Manufacturing & Distribution.  Responsible for day-to-day operations of Column Packing. Accountable for resources and results of the responsible departments. Provides leadership, organization, and technical support as needed.  May direct some work groups directly, and others through subordinate supervisors and leads

This position reports to the Director of Manufacturing and Distribution and is part of the Manufacturing Production team located in Torrance, California and will be an on-site role.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Oversee and optimize production processes; meet and exceed objectives for efficiency, throughput, and on-time delivery. Track and publish metrics as required. Make decisions and recommendations about equipment use, maintenance, modification, and procurement.
  • Create a positive work environment for all staff so that they feel motivated and empowered to meet goals and objectives and are appropriately recognized for their contributions.
  • Coordinate, set up, and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all production operations. Assure that there is adequate cross-training to support varied operations. With QC/QA, ensure adherence to prescribed procedures, achieving first pass quality results which meet or exceed objectives. Performs investigation and implements corrective actions within CAPA system.
  • Implement lean manufacturing principles in areas of responsibility.  Develop programs to improve performance, efficiencies, and productivity for key metrics for areas.
  • Create and adjust production and staff schedules as needed to meet objectives. Evaluate competencies of subordinates and provide leadership and development as required to achieve objects. Review performance formally on an annual basis. 
  • Ensure proper adherence to all Phenomenex policies, as regards Safety, Quality, EHS, and Time/Attendance. With HR and Safety, develop and implement programs to improve overall area safety. 
  • Partner with R&D and Marketing to transition new products to Production. Using established templates, perform analyses as needed, including capacity, staffing, product costs, and ROI. Present results to cross-functional groups.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Minimum 5+ years of manufacturing or industrial experience, preferably in chemical, biotechnology, aerospace, or automotive industry.
  • At least 3+ years of experience in manufacturing management and 2+ years of people leadership.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Business administration/management, Engineering or Chemistry preferred.
  • Experience using and utilizing ERP systems - Microsoft D365 or AX ERP knowledge is preferred. Experience with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvements.
  • Requires analytical thinking and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects. Demonstrated ability to lead personnel in a matrixed organization to meet production targets while prioritizing and working on special projects.
  • Requires analytical thinking and presenting ideas with strong communication with attention to detail, pay specific attention to tasks. Able to clearly and systematically write standard work and/or SOP's, Manuals, etc.

Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear.
  • The employee must have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Experience in various lean manufacturing processes with exposure to Toyota Production Systems.
  • In depth knowledge of quality principles and technical tools (root cause and problem analysis, statistical tools, lean conversion, variation reduction, design for six sigma, control charts). Demonstrated ability to take initiative and solve problems. Mechanical aptitude – ability to work in operations cells and partner with production engineers to create tools, jigs and fixtures to eliminate variation.

The annual salary range for this role is $100,000 - $150,000. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.

This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
