As a Zelus Product Scientist, you will be expected to:

  • Recommend improvements to existing platform capabilities, including providing supporting analyses to justify task prioritization
  • Lead group discussions and collaborate with data scientists and engineers to design, review, and execute validation plans for new and enhanced platform capabilities
  • Identify risks for the platform roadmap, and ensure the team is performing at a high level
  • Develop internal capabilities for analyzing, visualizing, and reporting model results
  • Prepare analyses and reports in response to ad-hoc requests from our partner clubs
  • Perform data modeling and quantitative analysis to support one or more research projects focused on player and team performance
  • Follow broader sports analytics trends by attending conferences, reviewing literature, and remaining informed about player and team performance
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively in a distributed work environment
  • Fulfill other related duties and responsibilities

In addition to the above, a Product Manager will be expected to:

  • Identify, recommend, and prioritize new platform capabilities and improvements to existing platform capabilities to facilitate the development of a long-term product roadmap
  • Maintain active communication channels with our partner clubs, supporting club use and integration of platform capabilities
  • Effectively communicate complex technical concepts and notable model features to both internal and external audiences
  • Provide guidance and project direction for junior team members
  • Assist with recruiting and outreach, including building a diverse network of future candidates

A qualified Product Scientist will be able to demonstrate several of the following and will be excited to learn the rest through the mentorship provided at Zelus:

  • Experience with key concepts in sports analytics, such as player evaluation and projection, on-field (on-ice/on-court) strategy, and predictive sport-specific metrics
  • Knowledge of how front offices use data and analytics to support player and team performance, ideally through professional experience
  • Ability to implement, interpret, and validate quantitative models (statistics, machine learning, optimization, and/or simulation)
  • Proficiency with relational databases and data analysis techniques
  • Competency with mathematical and statistical programming (Python and/or R)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with an established record as an effective collaborator

A qualified Product Manager will be able to demonstrate all of the above at a higher level of competency plus the following:

  • Advanced training or industry experience in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, operations research, or a related quantitative field
  • Experience using data and analytics to define and implement process improvements, focused on product development and/or data-driven decision making
  • Extensive experience authoring and reviewing technical documentation and communicating technical concepts with key stakeholders
  • Desire and ability to successfully mentor junior team members
