The Product Engineer will be part of a high-performing team responsible for maintaining cable design control, engineering administrative processes, and systems in support of manufacturing fiber optics cables. Key responsibilities include: design and system integration in support of the manufacturing of fiber optic cables, ensuring engineering processes are optimized to ensure efficiency and accuracy, engineering oversight of product engineering systems and processes to ensure timely item builds and customer responses, specification management, and timely execution of engineering changes. The role is critical to maintaining customer’s expectations and putting the customer first. The role requires someone who is flexible, able to work with numerous departments, is detail oriented, and driven to mistake free work. The position is within the Product Engineering department and reports into the Product Engineering Manager.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Support development, management, and improvement of all product engineering systems and databases containing tools and methodology for new item design/configuration, item engineering, product drawing/specification generation, and manufacturing setup attribute integration.
  • Manage generation and storage of product data across internal systems and analyze data integrity to ensure agreement across all sources.
  • Develop strategies for data acquisitions, archive recovery, and implementation of a database.
  • Interpret technical industry standards, regulatory compliance documentation, and Customer Drawings/Specifications and apply to AFL products, data management, and processes
  • Work directly with internal customers in support of customer application issues/inquiries.
  • Provide internal and external customers with cable product, systems, applications, and fiber expertise as needed
  • Support product line management initiatives including commercial strategies and documentation.
  • Create reports and query relevant data in support of internal customer requests.
  • Automate manual data processes, optimize user queries, and facilitate data research and understanding while partnering with analysts and business specialists
  • Participate in the development of new ETL processes and Back End integrations to make new and existing data sources readily available to other business systems, applications, and outside business partners using SQL Server and SSIS.
  • Lead product engineering projects that focus on efficiencies, mistake-proofing, and process improvements.
  • Support of all product engineering processes and systems including:
    • Cable design data/database for design control.
    • Item setup within ERP systems.
    • Customer specification revision control.
    • Regulatory compliance data and responses.
  • Support execution of engineering changes.
  • Manage and prioritize customer complaints and corrective actions to ensure efficient completion of tasks.
  • Other assignments as identified

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelors of Science in Engineering (or other related technical discipline). Non-degreed individuals will be considered as long as they have held an engineering defined role within an organization for a minimum of 10 years.
  • 3-8 years of working experience (coop experience a consideration) 
  • Supplemental education in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or work equivalent preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical industry (cable industry preferred)
  • 1+ years experience with SQL data management and/or development preferred
  • 3+ years advanced computer skills – MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access experience
  • Previous experience with managing data for Scheduling, Planning, Supply Chain, and Oracle ERP systems is a plus
  • Previous experience in the fiber optic industry, especially cable development, product engineering, and/or applications preferred
