About the Team

The Monetization team is a new cross-functional group working across engineering, product, research, and design to build the foundational systems that will help OpenAI scale access to intelligence responsibly. Our mission is to develop user-first, privacy-preserving monetization products—including next-generation ads experiences—that strengthen user trust, unlock economic opportunity, and support OpenAI’s long-term innovation.

Monetization plays a critical role in enabling OpenAI to continue pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities while ensuring the benefits of AGI are broadly shared. We believe monetization must be aligned with user value, uphold rigorous privacy and safety standards, and sustain a healthy ecosystem of developers and businesses.

This team operates in a greenfield environment and moves quickly through prototyping, experimentation, and iterative deployment. We partner closely with Product, Design, and Research to bring research breakthroughs into real-world systems at global scale.

About the Role

Our approach is grounded in a few core principles:

  • Mission alignment: Advertising must support OpenAI’s mission and long-term benefit to users.

  • Answer independence: Ads never influence the answers ChatGPT provides. Helpful, accurate responses always come first.

  • Conversation privacy: User conversations are private. We do not sell user data or share conversations with advertisers.

  • Long-term value: We prioritize trust and experience over time spent or short-term optimization.

  • Choice and control: Users have clear controls over personalization and can always choose an ad-free experience.

Design plays a critical role in upholding these principles. We’re hiring a product designer to help define what responsible, transparent, and user-first monetization and advertising systems look like in an AI-native product and setting a new standard for the industry.

This team designs and builds the monetization platform that powers privacy-preserving advertising at scale. This team designs the foundational tools and workflows that power the monetization and advertising lifecycle. We focus on building a scalable, high-quality platform that enables performant, advertiser-centric experiences. The ambition is to raise the bar for what modern advertising tools should be.

What you’ll do:
  • Build the next generation of advertising tools for AI-first world.

  • Translate our product principles—privacy, independence, choice, and trust—into concrete product and interaction decisions for advertiser-facing tools.

  • Partner with product, engineering, research, and policy teams to define new monetization and ads surfaces, systems, and workflows from the ground up.

  • Design user-facing controls for ad personalization, data usage, and opt-out flows, as well as intuitive interfaces for advertisers to manage campaigns responsibly.

  • Navigate complex tradeoffs between business needs, user trust, and long-term platform health.

  • Create thoughtful artifacts that help align cross-functional teams and guide execution across both consumer and console experiences.

  • Contribute to a design culture that values clarity, restraint, and responsibility as much as craft.

Why you’ll love this role

  • A rare opportunity to design advertising from first principles in a brand-new medium.

  • Direct impact on how millions of people experience trust, privacy, and control in AI products.

  • The chance to shape an ads system that prioritizes long-term value over short-term metrics.

  • A deeply collaborative, mission-driven environment that takes design seriously.

Preferred qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience designing digital products; more senior candidates welcome.

  • Experience with ads, monetization, or platform is a strong plus.

  • Familiarity with design systems and complex interaction patterns.

  • Experience working closely with engineering, product, and policy partners.

  • Proficiency with Figma and modern design workflows.

You might thrive in this role if you

  • Have experience shipping large scale software products

  • Have a portfolio showcasing strong UX, UI, and interaction design skills, with a high bar for quality and craft

  • Love thinking through complex interaction design problems

  • Possess impactful communication and storytelling skills

  • Enjoy tackling ambiguous problems and shaping them into a clear vision

  • Get excited about being immersed in the AI research process and defining how AI-first products should look and behave
