Associate producer/SunriseKGET/Telemundo in Bakersfield has an opening for an associate producer on our Emmy-winning Sunrise newscast.
This full-time permanent job is an excellent entry-level position for a serious journalist who aspires to a career on-air or as a producer.
Since we operate stations in two languages, the ability to speak and write in both English and Spanish is strongly desired.
Bakersfield is 90 minutes north of Los Angeles and two hours from the beach. It’s the ninth most populous city in California, and growing like crazy. More people live in Kern County than San Francisco County. We cover an area as big as Massachusetts and we aren’t afraid to chase local news wherever it happens.
Traditionally, the associate Sunrise producer has been the understudy to the Sunrise producer and the heir apparent to that job. He/She is, in effect, a co-producer of the show. It’s someone capable of producing the newscast when the producer calls in sick or goes on vacation.
The associate producer works 3:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
The associate producer produces the guest segments, writes intros for syndicated feed stories and pitches in wherever needed. If ready for an on-air introduction, this producer might appear on the morning broadcast.
The associate producer runs the assignment desk during the newscast and handles guests. A key part of this is monitoring the newsfeeds and scanners and writing breaking news stories for the producer, who is in the booth during the show.
After the newscast ends at 7 a.m., the associate producer, working with other members of the Sunrise staff, plans future newscasts.
This newscast is aimed at moms, but it’s a real newscast, not a female-oriented chat show. We do our share of water cooler stories and cute-pet videos, but we aim for stories that tell fathers and mothers how to keep their families safe or how to run a more efficient household.
KGET has a serious approach to news. In the last 12 years, we’ve earned 32 Edward R. Murrow Awards (including seven for Overall Excellence) and eight best newscast Emmys – including three for 17News@Sunrise.
If you’re interested, if you have at least a bachelor’s degree, drop an email to News Director Michael Trihey at [email protected] Be sure to put “associate producer” in the subject line.
