Your Role


Radio-Canada’s parliamentary bureau in Ottawa is looking for a talented, energetic Producer with a passion for federal politics. In this role, your will produce television, digital and radio stories for national news, contribute to the production of special broadcasts and co-ordinate the work of the ICI RDI reporter. You must be highly adaptable, excel under pressure and have a proven track record as a strong team player.


What You Do


You will plan, conceive, organize and/or develop the production of program segments, programs or series. All work must adhere to CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices, and you are ultimately responsible for ensuring that this occurs. There is wide latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity. There is also a regular and ongoing requirement to co-ordinate the work of others.


This role requires full-time on-site presence.


Key Tasks


  • Conceive and develop story and program ideas and concepts. Participate in the preparation of program objectives.
  • Develop the program content, including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing. As required, commission writing and/or research. 
  • Prepare scripts; determine the style, pace, tempo, lineup and format of the program.
  • Plan, organize and co-ordinate the program or components and/or segments of a program.
  • Plan, select and request, in collaboration with Executive Producer, the financial and operational resources required for news coverage and program production.
  • Exercise editorial responsibility as delegated by management.
  • As required, perform the following tasks:
  • Direct talent, sound and/or image.
  • Select, rewrite and/or edit copy or text written by others.
  • Ensure, in collaboration with copyright clearance officers or others, the proper and accurate clearance of all material used in the program.
  • Determine the order and importance of various elements of a program.
  • Assign, co-ordinate and supervise the work of personnel who contribute to the program or segment for which you are responsible.
  • Identify, develop and maintain contacts appropriate to the area of assignment.
  • Co-ordinate online content.
  • Oversee the shooting, editing, layout, digitizing and packaging of digital audio and video for the internet.
  • Assist with the shooting of digital video segments, including vertical video formats.
  • Utilize digital production tools to manipulate images and graphics.
  • Edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of, audio and/or visual elements.

Objective criteria:

  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Five years’ experience, of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, directly related to the area of assignment.
  • Strong team leadership skills with the ability to inspire others.
  • Superior writing, editorial and production skills; interest in cross-platform media production.
  • Solid journalistic background.

Subjective criteria:

  • Ability to produce relevant, audience-focused stories that reflect issues being discussed by the general public.
  • Ability to quickly react and respond to breaking stories.
  • In-depth knowledge of and interest in Canadian politics, including key players, policies and current events.
  • Strong editorial instincts and the ability to actively contribute to the content and stories produced by the bureau.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a network of contacts.
  • Innovative mindset and willingness to take risks.
  • Ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines; availability to work overtime.
  • Ability to solve problems independently and in group discussions.
  • Experience using a camera, editing content and operating a video display unit.
