Process Safety Manager

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

Sherwin-Williams is seeking a Corporate Process Safety Manager to support the Global Director of Process Safety and help lead the implementation of process safety strategies across global operations. This role will strengthen our Process Safety Management System by advancing best practices, reducing risk, ensuring compliance, and driving continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate brings strategic vision, strong technical expertise, and collaborative leadership to enhance global safety performance and align initiatives with corporate goals. As a trusted partner to site leadership, this role promotes a proactive safety culture and consistent application of process safety standards across all regions.

The position carries corporate responsibility for ensuring effective deployment of process safety technologies, management systems, and hazard‑assessment tools at all supported sites, working closely with Site and Plant Leadership, Regional EH&S Directors, Operations teams, and global functions such as Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Design & Construction.

(1) Develop, implement, and sustain the Company’s Corporate Process Safety programs:

• Support global implementation: Develop and maintain process safety management standards, systems, and compliance assurance processes to drive operational excellence and long-term sustainability.
• Design and execute risk-reduction initiatives: Target processes, equipment, and systems to prevent injuries, illnesses, exposures, and property loss.
• Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with Engineering, Risk Management, Operations, and other key stakeholders to ensure seamless execution of the safety strategy.
• Provide technical expertise: Offer consultation on specialized process and chemical engineering initiatives, including:
  • Resin manufacturing processes
  • Electrostatic hazard analysis and control
  • Relief and emergency vent sizing calculations
  • Evaluation of pressure and atmospheric vessels (e.g., resin or pressure vessels)
  • Dust collection system design and optimization
  • Inerting strategies, analysis, and control system design and review
  • Safe design practices for fumed silica, organic peroxide and nitrocellulose processing
  • Process piping, pumping, and material transfer safety
  • Assessment of thermal/catalytic oxidizers and wheel incinerator systems

1. Stay current on regulations: Maintain comprehensive knowledge of existing and emerging federal, state, and local process safety regulations. Recommend updates to company programs and processes to ensure compliance and operational excellence.
2. Drive audit and PHA closure: Provide hands-on support to operational sites in addressing audit and Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) findings. Develop and implement solutions for EHS risk and compliance gaps, partnering with Global Supply Chain Engineering to create site-specific engineering documents, including bid packages and specifications.
3. Lead process safety initiatives: Support projects involving process safety information, electrical classification documentation, SOP development, and Management of Change (MOC) requests—particularly where expertise beyond the facility level is required.
4. Build organizational capability: Coach and mentor site EHS professionals and engineers to strengthen competence in process safety. Serve as a facilitator for engineering solutions and health and safety risk reduction strategies.

(2) Risk Analysis, Prevention & Investigations: 

1. Lead process safety audits: Conduct audits, report findings, recommend corrective actions, and directly support risk reduction efforts.
2. Facilitate hazard analyses: Lead team-based Process Hazard Analyses (HAZOPs, What-If Analyses) and high-hazard project reviews; prepare findings and recommendation reports.
3. Support advanced studies: Assist sites with Facility Siting studies and consequence analyses.
4. Mentor and assure quality: Coach PHA facilitators and perform quality assurance reviews of PHAs.
5. Interpret mechanical integrity data: Assist sites in evaluating test results for equipment and piping integrity.
6. Investigate incidents: Participate/Lead in process-related incident and accident investigations as needed.
7. Exercise stop-work authority: Cease operations in the event of imminent danger to personnel or facilities.
8. Engage external expertise: Identify and recommend qualified safety engineering consulting firms for local PSM compliance support when necessary.
9. Build organizational capability: Strengthen site competency in PSM through training, facilitation, and program implementation during all visits and activities.
10. Serve as subject matter expert: Act as the regional/divisional authority on Process Safety Management.

(3) Training & Support:

1. Lead global standards and training: Drive the development of Global EHS standards, deliver training programs, and provide audit support to ensure compliance and best practices.
2. Review capital projects: Conduct EHS capital project reviews for guideline approval and risk mitigation.
3. Deliver specialized training: Lead or support targeted training for business segment leaders and employees responsible for process safety management.
4. Develop site competence: Build capability among site EHS and engineering leaders to facilitate Process Hazard Assessments (PHAs) and Process Safety Audits.
5. Support regional sites: Assist multiple sites in developing and executing PSM self-assessments and annual action plans.
6. Approve safety system impairments: Review and authorize safety system impairment requests to maintain operational integrity.
7. Ensure reactive chemical safety: Verify that each supported site maintains an effective Reactive Chemicals program.

(4) Compliance & Legal:

1. Represent the company externally: Serve as a company representative during regulatory inspections, inquiries, and due diligence processes related to Process Safety and Chemical Security.
2. Ensure regulatory compliance: Assess and verify compliance with OSHA, EPA, and country-specific process safety management regulations.
3. Support certification efforts: Assist operations in preparing for process safety-related certifications, including VPP (Voluntary Protection Program).
4. Maintain professional expertise: Stay current with industry regulations and best practices through ongoing professional development and maintain relevant certifications.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in a physical science or engineering discipline.
• 12+ years of experience in PSM-regulated facilities or within the chemical or coatings industry.
• Strong expertise in batch processing, chemical process safety, process hazard analysis methods (e.g., What-If, HAZOP, Checklist), environmental capture and control systems, accident/incident investigation, PSM/RMP auditing, and EHS Management Systems.
• Proven experience facilitating Process Hazard Analyses using HAZOP or equivalent methodologies.
• Demonstrated success in implementing risk reduction strategies through design and engineering controls.
• Comprehensive knowledge of general safety engineering principles.
• Ability to engage senior leadership and influence decision-making at all organizational levels.
• Capacity to manage high-stress situations, including investigations of serious incidents (injury, fatality), fires, explosions, and regulatory inquiries.
• Working knowledge of RAGAGEP standards, including NFPA, ASME, API, ANSI, and IEC 61511.

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for employment work visa status now or in the future.

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
• Master’s degree in a physical science or engineering discipline (preferred).
• Professional certifications such as Professional Engineer (P.E.), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Six Sigma, or expertise in Human Factors Engineering (preferred).
• 15+ years of experience in PSM-regulated facilities or within the chemical or coatings industry.
• International experience with global process safety standards, safety engineering practices, and hazard management.
• Proficiency in advanced risk assessment methods, including conducting Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA).
