We are seeking an innovative process engineer to develop and integrate novel manufacturing processes to create best-in-class commercial devices. In this role you will bring your experience in microfabrication and complex process flows to go from raw materials to fully packaged devices, while supporting Design for X (DfX, where X is a suite of advanced manufacturing process tools). You will apply your first-principles and cross-cutting knowledge of mechanical, chemical, and materials engineering in the fast-paced, semi-automated fab to optimize and improve processes. The ideal candidate has a passion for manufacturing and process control, while digitally tracking and analyzing process data to monitor and ensure process performance. At the same time, you will contribute critically to our mission to revolutionize manufacturing by translating processes to our unique digital autonomous platform at scale.
This position is full-time and is located in our Emeryville location, reporting to the Director of Process Engineering.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop process flows for major device subsystems for high-mix, high-volume production
- Drive continuous improvement by defining, monitoring, and controlling fabrication processes
- Work hands-on with manual and semi-automated tools to conduct manufacturing experiments and process reliability testing; interpret, analyze, and report results.
- Work cross-functionally with technicians, product engineers, and quality engineers to improve process flow to meet commercial targets.
- Leverage thin-film processes (e.g., bonding, plasma, electrochemical, PVD) to engineer surfaces and create multilayer structures.
- Apply metrology techniques to evaluate materials and components (e.g., X-ray CT, SEM/EDS, XRF, optical imaging, and profilometry).
- Perform complementary testing to evaluate the mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and thermal performance of full devices and/or their components.
- Perform root cause analysis of devices and processes and contribute to process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA).
- Write, maintain, and improve process and product documentation.
What You’ll Need:
- Disciplines of study preferred: Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related fields.
- Demonstrated strong analytical skills using statistical process control (SPC), design of experiments (DOE), and analysis of variance (ANOVA).
- Hands-on experience translating R&D processes to a manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of micromachining technologies, including lithography, deposition, plating, and etching of materials (including metals, ceramics, and polymers).
- Experience developing and following stringent standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Working familiarity with Python and other software interfaces.
- Familiarity with CAD and use of CMM to perform geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) analyses.
- Training or experience in Six-Sigma, Lean, Kaizen, or other process improvement methods is preferred.
- Experience with laser micromachining is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree, 2+ years of work experience.

What We Do
Atomic Machines is redefining humanity’s relationship with matter. We see a future where our tools will allow us to reorganize matter at the atomic level at will, where we will go from bits to atoms for any object or machine that can be designed in alignment with physical laws. We have begun our journey with the development of a robotic manufacturing platform capable of making an entirely new class of micro-electromechanical (MEMS) devices. We are well funded and have exceptionally strong product/market fit and a clear go-to-market path for the device we will make first with our platform. Our platform breaks traditional manufacturing paradigms and constraints, enabling inexpensive rapid prototyping as well as large scale manufacturing with highly compelling economics.
Joining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team working on a massive world-changing mission. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its early days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.
