The Role
The Process Engineering Lead will oversee the technical design basis for combustion systems, biogas processing, and gas compression projects, producing necessary engineering documents, and providing guidance on instrumentation, controls, and safety. They will also perform calculations, participate in HAZOPs, and support project proposals.

About CRA
CRA is a purpose-engineered gas systems company
specialising in combustion, emissions control, biogas processing, and gas
compression. We design and manufacture flare systems, thermal oxidisers, biogas
compression and upgrading plants, gas processing skids, and burner management
systems for clients across India and 25+ countries.
The Role
We are looking for a Process Engineering Lead to
own process engineering across CRA’s product portfolio. You will own the
technical design basis for projects spanning combustion systems, biogas
processing, and gas compression — producing the foundational engineering
documents that the rest of the team designs and builds from.
Responsibilities
Across All Product Lines
- Develop design basis documents, mass and energy
balances, process flow diagrams, and P&IDs for all projects.
- Write control philosophies and define operating sequences, interlock logic,
trip conditions, and safety requirements with reference to applicable
standards.
- Perform combustion and process calculations: stoichiometry, air/fuel ratio,
adiabatic flame temperature, flue gas composition, heat release, pressure drop,
residence time.
- Guide the instrumentation and controls team on BMS architecture, instrument
selection, and safety system requirements (SIL targets, SafetyRequirements
Specifications).
- Participate in HAZOPs — either leading CRA’s internal HAZOP or providing
process input to the client/EPC’s HAZOP.
- Review mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation outputs for consistency with
the design basis.
- Support proposals with preliminary sizing, equipment selection, standards
references, and technical content.
- Travel to project sites (domestic and international) for commissioning support,
client meetings, and site surveys.
Combustion (Flares, Thermal Oxidisers, VCUs,
BMS)
- Combustion chamber sizing: residence time, heat
intensity, temperature profile.
- Flare radiation calculations (API 521) and stack height determination.
- Burner selection and sizing: fuel flexibility, turndown ratio, flame stability.
- Emission calculations: NOx, CO, VOC destruction efficiency.
- Refractory specification and shell temperature analysis.
- BMS safety function definition and SIL target
declaration.
Biogas Processing & Upgrading
- Biogas characterisation and variability
assessment (CH₄/CO₂/H₂S/moisture).
- Gas treatment technology selection and sizing: H₂S removal, dehydration, CO₂
removal (amine, membrane, PSA).
- CBG plant process design: compression stages, inter-stage cooling, quality
compliance (IS 16087 or applicable standards).
Gas Compression & Processing Skids
- Compressor sizing: flow, pressure ratio, gas
properties, stage count, intercooling.
- Driver selection: electric motor vs. gas engine, power calculations, altitude
derating.
- Skid process design: scrubbers, separators, coolers, control valves, relief
devices.
- Process datasheets for bought-out equipment (compressors, heat exchangers,
vessels).
Requirements
Must Have
- Degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical
Engineering.
- 10+ years of process engineering experience in equipment design, EPC, or a
technology company — producing design basis documents, P&IDs, and process
calculations as primary deliverables.
- Working knowledge of combustion thermodynamics: stoichiometry, air/fuel ratio,
flame temperature, flue gas composition, excess air.
- Working knowledge of gas processing fundamentals: compression thermodynamics,
gas treatment technologies, phase behaviour.
- Familiarity with relevant standards: API 521, NFPA 86 or EN 746, ASME/IS codes
for pressure equipment.
- Ability to produce engineering documents that other disciplines design from.
Preferred
- Experience with biogas or CBG plant process
design.
- HAZOP participation experience.
- Exposure to functional safety concepts: IEC 61511, SIL assessment, LOPA.
- Process simulation capability (Aspen HYSYS, ProMax, or similar).
- Experience in an equipment OEM environment.
Benefits
- Lean, ownership-driven culture — high autonomy, direct access to leadership,
and visible impact.
- Build and lead the process engineering function as it scales.
