As a part of the global industrial organization Marmon Holdings—which is backed by Berkshire Hathaway—you’ll be doing things that matter, leading at every level, and winning a better way. We’re committed to making a positive impact on the world, providing you with diverse learning and working opportunities, and fostering a culture where everyone’s empowered to be their best.

The Opportunity

The Process Engineer Co-op will work closely with production supervisors, operators, and support teams to improve daily manufacturing performance. The co-op will begin with direct shop-floor experience to understand the product, equipment, process flow, production targets, and challenges faced by team members. With coaching from engineering and operations leaders, the co-op will help solve problems and lead appropriately scoped improvement projects.

What You Will Do

  • Spend time on the production floor learning how products, machines, tooling, materials, staffing, and information flow through the process.
  • Work with operators, technicians, and supervisors to understand daily pain points and recognize the eight wastes of Lean manufacturing.
  • Support production supervisors in tracking and achieving daily safety, quality, delivery, and productivity targets.
  • Help investigate missed targets, bottlenecks, recurring disruptions, quality issues, and ergonomic concerns.
  • Collect and analyze production data, complete process observations, and establish clear performance baselines.
  • Use structured problem-solving methods to identify root causes and recommend practical countermeasures.
  • Improve standard work, visual controls, workplace organization, material flow, and other process documentation.
  • Coordinate with production, maintenance, quality, materials, and engineering when improvements require cross-functional support.
  • Take ownership of appropriately scoped improvement projects and communicate progress, results, risks, and roadblocks.

What You Will Learn

  • How production teams manage safety, quality, delivery, labor, and throughput each day.
  • How to use Lean tools such as waste observation, process mapping, 5S, standard work, visual management, and time studies.
  • How to apply data and root-cause analysis to real manufacturing problems.
  • How to implement changes with operators and supervisors so improvements are practical and sustainable.
  • How engineering, operations, quality, maintenance, and materials work together in a manufacturing environment.

What We Are Looking For

  • Currently pursuing an associates degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Interest in manufacturing operations, Lean, continuous improvement, or production leadership.
  • Comfort working hands-on in a production environment and learning directly from operators and supervisors.
  • Basic ability to organize and analyze data using Microsoft Excel or similar tools.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to ask questions and follow problems through to resolution.
  • Ability to manage several responsibilities while keeping stakeholders informed.
  • Previous manufacturing or Lean experience is helpful but not required.

A Successful Intern Will

  • Earn trust by listening to operators and understanding the process before recommending changes.
  • Help supervisors and team members solve meaningful production problems.
  • Use data to demonstrate whether an improvement worked.
  • Leave behind documented, sustainable improvements that strengthen safety, quality, or throughput.

Following receipt of a conditional offer of employment, candidates will be required to complete additional job-related screening processes as permitted or required by applicable law.

We are an equal opportunity employer, and all applicants will be considered for employment without attention to their membership in any protected class. If you require any reasonable accommodation to complete your application or any part of the recruiting process, please email your request to [email protected], and please be sure to include the title and the location of the position for which you are applying.

Skills Required

  • Comfort working hands-on in a production environment and learning from operators and supervisors.
  • Basic ability to organize and analyze data using Microsoft Excel or similar tools.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
