OVERVIEW 

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL is seeking a Process Design Engineer II/III. This position’s primary function is to contribute to refinery/organizational process optimization and project development. This includes identifying opportunities and developing projects to increase throughput, enhance yields, improve reliability, and optimize energy or water use in process units. This position reports to the Process Optimization & Growth Manager. 

 

Relocation is approved for this position.  

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Contributes to refinery/organizational long-term strategy development and identifies opportunities to increase throughput, improve yields, increase reliability and optimize energy use in process units. Supports the development of process designs for new projects and unit modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and heat/material balances. 

  • May perform process simulations and calculations to support equipment sizing, hydraulic analysis, and energy optimization as well as lead economic analysis and establish project rate of return. 

  • Collaborates with project engineers, operations, and external vendors to ensure alignment of design with operational needs.  

  • Prepares process design packages and support HAZOPs, LOPA studies, and other safety reviews. 

  • Stays current with industry standards and best practices to ensure high-quality, cost-effective designs. 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

 

Minimum (Required) Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering 

  • Two (2) years of process engineering experience within refining or heavy industry 

  • A valid driver’s license  

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future 

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery and be able to physically perform all tasks in the field 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Four (4) years of process engineering experience within refining or heavy industry 

  • Two (2) plus years of project or process design experience 

 

SKILLS 

  • Microsoft Office applications, including Excel 

  • Petrosim or similar process modelling such as MySep 

  • KG Tower

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS 

Options: 

1. 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗜𝗻-𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲: 5 days in the office per week, 8 hours per day. 
2. 𝗛𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱: 4 days in the office, 1 day work-from-home per week, 8 hours per day. 
3. 𝟵/𝟴𝟬 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲: 9 hours Monday-Thursday in the office, with every other Friday off. On working Fridays, the schedule is 8 hours. 

Additional hours as needed for turnaround and outage support.
