Position Description

The mission of Anoka County Community Corrections is working to build a safer community. We are committed to leading through implementing innovative, research based, and results driven services. The Community Corrections department has immediate openings for Probation Officer Assistants. In this role, you’ll work with residents in three juvenile correctional facilities, providing individual and group support through program facilitation, maintaining safety and security, documenting behavior, and performing regular well-being checks.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-site position. Interviews will begin the week of July 6th, 2026, for those selected to move forward in the hiring process. 

Pay & Benefits

  • Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 30 COR INST: $58,988.80 to $82,596.80 ($28.36 to $39.71 per hour).

Work Location

  • This position will work at an Anoka County Juvenile Center campus facility, located at 7555 4th Ave, Lino Lakes, MN, 55014.
  • Positions follow a rotating shift schedule, which will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Most assignments are scheduled during the second shift (3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.) or third shift (11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.).
  • Full-time Probation Officer Assistants work a structured schedule of six consecutive days on duty (including weekends and holidays), followed by three consecutive days off.
  • All institution staff are scheduled on a rotating schedule which may vary based on business needs and supervisory discretion.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Probation Officer Assistant.

  • Follow DOC licensing standards including mandated resident well-being and high-risk checks.
  • Facilitate intakes for new admissions.
  • Complete audits on the following: medication delivery, CSTS-FA intakes, youth property, and building supplies.
  • Focus on pro-social skill development, effective use of rewards and sanctions, use of a variety of individual/group counseling approaches, and facilitation of diverse programming.
  • Distribute medication, maintain care, and custody of all residents in placement.
  • Communicate with all stakeholders and complete required paperwork.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of resident activity utilizing department and offender data systems and computer hardware.
  • Respond to emergency situations and call for assistance in the worksite and intervene with appropriate level of force.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Requires a high school diploma.
  • In lieu of the required education, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older by date of hire. 
  • Successfully pass driver’s license background check. 
  • Must have valid driver's license and vehicle available for business use. 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or closely related field.
  • One year (2,080 annual hours) of job-related experience in a correctional or probation setting.
  • Knowledge of criminal justice system, processes, and chemical health policies and laws.
  • Knowledge of state laws related to correctional facilities.
  • Skill in motivational interviewing techniques and investigation strategies.
  • Skill in effective behavior modification and de-escalation strategies.
  • Experience with evidence-based correctional practices.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Standard office environment, correctional and detention institutions, field offices, courtrooms, offender'/clients' homes, hospitals and schools, and various community settings depending on assignment.
  • Work activities may involve contact with, and the supervision of juveniles or adults charged with major or minor criminal offenses, and/or individuals who may be hostile, dangerous, threatening, armed, and aggressive and/or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Consequently, some assignments may encounter stressful and physically threatening situations. 
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness. 
  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
  • Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties. 
  • Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills. 
  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing. 
  • Physical activity may include handling/carrying equipment, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Periodic high levels of exertion in the form of self-defense, pursuit, or restraint of an individual are possible for some assignments. 
  • Lifting over 100 lbs. in emergency situations. 
  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to various law enforcement equipment depending on assignment. 
  • Law enforcement equipment may include but is not limited to radios, pagers, restraints, handcuffs, first aid equipment, restraints, chemical agents, Tasers, and protective equipment such as masks, goggles, and gloves. 
  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle. 
  • Additional physical/mental requirements that occur may not be listed above, but are inherent in performing the position's essential functions. 
  • Exposure to bodily fluids, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, or other hazards is possible while performing essential duties.

Union Representation

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between Anoka County and the Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS) union.
