The Opportunity

We seek an experienced, capable Data Architect who can bring a data-driven architecture approach to product development and business transformation. The Data Architect will work with technology management, development teams, and partner closely with the product team to ensure data is at the heart of our design thinking.

The right candidate will have a broad background in data modelling and data architectures supporting key business areas like Finance, ideally across multiple industries, including Retail.

We have a mixed approach to delivery, pulling on our agile start-up roots whilst implementing Safe to align between traditional roles and delivery and agile principles. The position will ensure that architecture processes are adhered to and work closely aligned to the existing ESW delivery processes, being involved in relevant retros to improve these continually. Reporting to the Director of Architecture, the role will assist in making critical architectural decisions that will influence the company's direction. The successful individual will also be responsible for evangelizing and communicating the benefits of data-driven approaches to the broader ESW team. The Data Architect will also work with data teams across product and technology to ensure we have the best data architectures required to continue our growth.

Whilst we are primarily Microsoft Azure-based, we also use GCP and some AWS. We are looking for someone with diverse but strong skills in data modelling, core data architecture principles, cloud data platforms, modern data pipeline or ETL tools and data visualization technologies (but not necessarily a data visualization expert). Someone who understands event-driven architectures, event-streaming, and the qualities of sound events based on DDD and business canonical models.

You should want to do things better – we believe in continuous improvement of the development process – and you should have an opinion and contribute to improving. Caring about agile, continuous integration, deployment, TDD, unit and system testing would be best.

While frequent travel is not expected, visits to our client sites in the US, Europe and Worldwide will be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for feeding into the overall ESW Data Strategy from a Technology perspective, working aligned to the Product/Business.
  • Be a leader in the company's comprehensive data governance initiatives.
  • Ensure the proper guardrails (principles, policies and standards) are implemented across ESW.
  • Be a positive mentor to the broader technology teams on the importance of a data-driven approach.
  • Work closely with Solution Architects to help domains with data modelling understand the fundamental concepts of master systems of record.
  • Build and document the target architecture that supports operational data storage and data warehouse, fed by a combination of near real-time event streams and batch data sources.
  • Led the data architecture for the Finance Transformation Program, providing data model designs and working with third parties to ensure data contracts were agreed upon. Ensuring data ODS design is aligned with broader principles and standards.

Key Experience & Skills

  • Expert experience in data modelling (using one or more: Kimball, Inmon, Data Vault, Graph, Documents, etc.).
  • Experience using one or more: Azure DW, RedShift, Snowflake, GCP, SQL Server.
  • Intellectual curiosity, learning agility, and enthusiasm for tackling challenging problems.
  • Outstanding communication skills required - primarily the ability to communicate ideas.
  • Deep problem solving – the ability to analyze a business or technical problem and select the most appropriate solutions.
  • Understanding of risk in designs and mitigation strategies.
  • Experience in the retail industry would be a significant advantage.
