Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is looking for a motivated GNC Engineer (Principal or Sr Principal Engineer - Guidance Navigation Control) to support the Advanced Weapons Team in Northridge, California.

The selected candidate will be responsible for developing new and / or integrate existing system simulation frameworks, performance models and algorithms, threat models and command and control models.

You will work with air vehicle and subsystem engineers, as well as with program and customer leadership, to recommend candidate designs, and to develop Concepts of Operation (CONOPs) and Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) at the system, mission, and campaign levels.

This drives the development of clean-sheet requirements, refine existing program system requirements, and influence the pursuit of future technologies and capabilities.

Our work influences the investment decisions of our senior leadership and customer program offices.

Essential Functions include the following:

  • Requirements analysis for guided missile concept design.

  • Perform air-to-ground and air-to-air missile trajectory design, optimization, and dispersion analysis for all phases of flight to meet mission requirements subject to mission and vehicle constraints. Which include the followings:

    • Perform trade studies to improve weapon performance and reliability.

    • Develop and implement new GNC algorithms in prototype software to support mission unique capabilities.

    • Develop automation tools for mission design, analysis, test, and evaluation.

    • Interact with customers to execute current missions and develop future business.

This position can be filled at either the Principal Engineer or Sr. Principal Engineer level.

Basic Qualifications

  • For Principal GNC Engineer: BS degree in Aerospace Engineering with 5+ years of relevant industry experience or 3 years' experience with MS degree

  • For a Sr. Principal GNC Engineer: BS degree in Aerospace Engineering with 9+ years of relevant industry experience or 7 years' experience with MS degree

  • Relevant industrial experience:

    • Guided missile/projectile or UAV development: requirements definition; non-linear 6DOF modeling and simulation (see Specific Technical Skills below); flight tests support.

    • Guidance Navigation, Control, and Target State Estimation algorithm design, test, and evaluation (see Specific Technical Skills below). 

    • Working knowledge of flight vehicle aerodynamics, solid rocket/ramjet propulsion, and design optimization.

  • **Current DoD Secret Clearance and be able to obtain Program Special Access within a reasonable period, as determined by the company to meet its business needs.

Specific Technical Skills:

  • Develop performance models of missile sub-systems (navigation sensors, targeting sensors, propulsion systems, control actuation systems) and threat models for non-linear 6DOF simulation.

  • Design Guidance algorithm: Guidance Law, Trajectory Optimization, Flight Vehicle Autonomy

  • Design Navigation algorithm: Initial Alignment, Strapdown Propagation, INS filter.

  • Design Flight Control algorithm: Trim Point Selection, LTI Trim and Maneuver Analysis, Non-linear Dynamic Analysis.

  • Design Target State Estimation algorithm: Angle Only Tracking, Maneuvering Target Tracking, Multi-Target Tracking, Multi-Sensor Data Fusion, Track File Manager.

  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink software tools and related toolboxes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proposal development, writing and execution.

  • Effective project management and leadership skills

  • Excellent communications skills, including the ability to present and brief technical data to all levels of leadership within the organization and U.S. Government

  • Experience with version control tools (Bitbucket, GitHub, or Gitlab, etc.)

  • Analysis of Survivability, Lethality, Vulnerability, Engagement at the mission level

  • Experience integrating plug-ins to AFSIM.

Relocation assistance, while not guaranteed, may be available.

The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site in Northridge, CA. No remote/telework arrangement is available for this position.

Salary Range: $104,600.00 - $157,000.00Salary Range 2: $129,700.00 - $194,500.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
