Are you ready to be part of the future of healthcare? Can you think big, be bold, and harness the power of digital and AI to tackle longstanding life sciences challenges? Then Evinova, a health tech business part of the AstraZeneca Group, might be for you.

We are building software that transforms clinical trials for billions of patients worldwide. Evinova delivers market-leading digital health solutions that are science-based, evidence-led, and human experience-driven. We combine deep scientific expertise with modern software engineering and artificial intelligence to create new standards across the sector.

About Our Engineering Organization

Our Product Engineering organization consists of cross-functional squads with the people and skills needed to deliver innovative digital products to patients and healthcare providers in clinical trials worldwide. We ship on quarterly program increments using agile methodology.

We are proud to have one of the strongest software development teams in the health tech space, with deep technical and domain skills. This is a place where you build real things, solve hard problems, and grow alongside engineers who care deeply about their craft and its purpose.

About the Role

This is a cross-cutting engineering leadership role rather than a product-area or line-management role. We are looking for a technical leader who sets the standards other squads work within, and stays close enough to the code to be credible doing it. You will own production health, engineering intelligence, and operational enablement across the Unified Trial Solution, and lead the special projects and transitions that need structure and delivery focus.

You will spend your time where the leverage is: defining observability and support standards, leading the L4 Support Squad, and building the dashboards and metrics that give engineering leadership a live view of delivery health and system reliability. The remainder of your time is spent on cross-functional collaboration, stakeholder and scorecard reporting, and the special projects that need structure and delivery focus — stalled transitions, platform migrations, and onboarding programs where several teams have to be pulled onto one outcome.

We expect you to be the strongest voice in the room on production health and delivery discipline — someone who can credibly challenge how a squad instruments and supports its services, read the engineering signals behind a delivery risk, and build the tooling or process that fixes it rather than escalating it.

Key Responsibilities

Production Health & L4 Support
  • Lead the L4 Support Squad — own the escalation process, resolution standards, and the feedback loop that routes production issues back to the right squad for root cause resolution.
  • Define and maintain observability standards across UTS: how squads instrument their services, what monitoring and alerting is required at launch, and how incidents are triaged and resolved.
  • Own the production health metrics that give engineering leadership a live view of system reliability, error rates, and support volume across all UTS products.
Engineering Intelligence & Metrics
  • Build and maintain the Unify engineering intelligence dashboard — surfacing delivery health, quality signals, AI adoption, and team performance across all squads in a format engineering leadership can act on.
  • Own our engineering metrics tooling and standards: how teams use JIRA, how we interpret GitHub signals, and how platforms like Jellyfish are configured and maintained.
  • Measure and report AI usage across UTS — adoption rates, code generation patterns, and quality outcomes — so we understand where AI is genuinely accelerating delivery and where it isn’t.
  • Maintain the UTS delivery success register — a living record of what the organization has shipped, for use in stakeholder communications, scorecard reporting, and internal alignment.

Operational Enablement

  • Serve as the operational backbone of UTS engineering — ensuring reviews happen on time, scorecard and commitment responses are tracked and actioned, and cross-team communications are timely, accurate, and useful.
  • Own the UTS engineering operational calendar: review cycles, reporting cadences, governance checkpoints, and the coordination required to keep seven squads aligned without unnecessary overhead.
  • Surface risks, blockers, and drift from commitments to engineering leadership before they become delivery problems.
  • Build and maintain the cross-team communication rhythm that keeps squads, stakeholders, and leadership informed without creating coordination overhead that slows engineering down

Special Projects, Transitions & Delivery Recovery

  • Lead strategically important initiatives across UTS and related clinical technology platforms, with particular focus on regulated transformations, platform transitions, data migrations, customer onboarding, testing capability, and operational readiness.
  • Bring structure and delivery focus to complex or challenged initiatives, including situations where progress has stalled, responsibilities are unclear, or multiple teams and stakeholders need to be aligned around a common outcome.
  • Apply strong experience from GxP, clinical study platforms, and software release management to ensure that technology, quality, compliance, testing, operations, and business readiness are addressed as one integrated delivery.
  • Build lasting delivery capability beyond the individual project, establishing sustainable ways of working, clear ownership, governance, and handover to permanent teams or operational leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong track record of building and shipping production systems.
  • 3+ years leading engineering teams or cross-cutting engineering functions (support, platform, operations, or similar), including setting standards that other teams are held to.
  • Working proficiency in at least one of our core stacks — React/React Native, Node.js/Java, AWS — sufficient to read code, assess how a service is instrumented, and hold your own with squad engineering leads.
  • Demonstrated ownership of production support and observability standards — escalation and resolution processes, monitoring and alerting requirements, and the feedback loop that drives incidents back to root cause.
  • Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, or similar), and the judgment to measure adoption and quality outcomes honestly across teams.
  • Strong understanding of agile delivery frameworks (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) applied in practice, not just theory.
  • Experience building delivery and quality reporting from engineering tooling — JIRA, GitHub, and platforms such as Jellyfish or equivalent — in a form leadership can act on.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent demonstrated through professional experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience leading platform transitions, data migrations, or customer onboarding programs in a regulated environment, including picking up initiatives where progress had stalled.
  • Experience developing and delivering healthcare professional, clinical research associate, site-facing, or clinical trial operations software.
  • Familiarity with GxP, SaMD validation, or regulated software development processes.
  • Experience with software release management on clinical study platforms, coordinating technology, quality, operations, and business readiness as one integrated delivery.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or a visible track record of technical thought leadership (blog posts, conference talks, published architectural decisions).
  • Clinical research domain experience.

What This Role Is Not

  • A pure people-management position removed from engineering practice. You will be reading code, reviewing how services are instrumented, and building tooling and dashboards yourself — if you have not been close to the technical detail recently, this role is not the right fit.
  • A role with one product area to own. Your remit is UTS-wide: you are measured on the production health, delivery signals, and operational discipline of every squad.
  • A checkbox exercise in AI adoption. We need someone who can measure where AI is genuinely accelerating delivery and where it is not, report that honestly, and act on what the data shows.
