Hybrid work

Udemy is headquartered in San Francisco with global offices in Australia, India, Ireland, Türkiye, and other US locations. Our robust hybrid work model spans San Francisco, Denver, Ankara, Dublin, Mexico City and Melbourne.

About this role 

As a Principal or Senior Staff Engineer on the Native Mobile team, you will be responsible for driving the technical direction of our Android mobile application, supporting millions of users worldwide. Leveraging your expertise in Android development and cross-platform technologies (such as React Native or Kotlin Multiplatform), you will create scalable and high-quality solutions. This position is ideal for an engineer passionate about Android technology, cross-platform development, and leading technical initiatives to deliver impactful mobile experiences.

You will collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering teams to deliver innovative features, while also providing technical leadership and mentorship to fellow engineers. As a key technical leader, you will guide the architecture of our Android apps and ensure the use of best practices to deliver seamless user experiences across platforms.

What you'll be doing

  • Spearhead Android Development: Own and evolve the technical roadmap for Android applications, ensuring alignment with other leads and overall business goals.
  • Cross-Platform Solutions: Implement and optimize cross-platform technologies (such as React Native or Kotlin Multiplatform) to improve efficiency, performance, and maintainability across Android and iOS platforms.
  • Collaborate on Product Strategy: Work closely with product management and design teams to define technical requirements, architect innovative solutions, and deliver on critical product milestones across mobile platforms.
  • Architect and Build Solutions: Architect and develop scalable, high-performance Android applications using Kotlin and other modern mobile technologies, ensuring seamless integration of features.
  • Mentorship & Code Reviews: Dedicate time to reviewing code, setting engineering standards, and mentoring junior and mid-level engineers. Promote coding best practices, testing, and code quality standards.
  • Foster Innovation: Cultivate a culture of innovation by encouraging experimentation with new frameworks, tools, and techniques that enhance mobile app performance and development efficiency.
  • Performance Optimization: Lead efforts to improve performance and responsiveness of Android apps, ensuring optimal user experiences.
  • Reliability & Scalability: Architect Android solutions that can scale to handle millions of users, ensuring reliability, security, and scalability of the applications.

What you’ll have

  • 8+ years of experience in Android development, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality mobile applications at scale using Kotlin, Java, and modern Android libraries.
  • Cross-platform development expertise with technologies like React Native, Kotlin Multiplatform, or Flutter is highly valued. Hands-on experience implementing cross-platform solutions across Android and iOS.
  • 3+ years of technical leadership experience, driving complex, multi-platform projects and fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
  • Mobile Architecture Expertise: Deep knowledge of mobile architectures, design patterns (MVVM, MVP), and experience in Android performance optimization techniques.
  • Proven ability to innovate: Experience driving technological advancements, experimenting with new frameworks, and adopting tools that enhance product quality and development processes.
  • Mentorship and Leadership: Strong ability to mentor and develop engineers at all levels. You are passionate about fostering the next generation of Android talent.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven track record of collaborating with cross-functional teams and influencing stakeholders.
