Principal Software Engineer

About the Job:

The Principal Software Engineer, Delivery Systems, is a senior technical leader responsible for architecture, technology strategy, and execution across FMI’s ordering management and adjacent commercial and laboratory platforms. This role will lead the transition of Ordering Management capabilities from Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) to Salesforce while ensuring scalable, compliant solutions and operational continuity across FMI’s business-critical systems.

Partnering with business and technology leaders, the Principal Software Engineer defines transition-state and future-state architectures, owns key technical roadmaps and solution decisions, guides integration strategies across Salesforce, D365, LIMS, Medical Reporting, Billing, and other core platforms, and helps engineering teams translate architecture into reliable delivery outcomes.

As a trusted technical advisor, the Principal Software Engineer leads complex transformation initiatives, establishes engineering standards, champions secure and AI-enabled delivery practices, and mentors engineering teams to improve business capabilities, operational efficiency, and long-term platform sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

• CRM Transformation & Platform Leadership 
  • Serve as the technical lead for the enterprise CRM transformation, driving the migration of Ordering Management capabilities from Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) to Salesforce
  • Own key architectural decisions, technical roadmaps, solution designs, and engineering standards for CRM and Ordering Management platforms
  • Define transition-state and future-state architectures that support D365 and Salesforce coexistence, maintain business continuity, and enable the controlled retirement of legacy Ordering Management capabilities
  • Design scalable Salesforce solutions aligned with existing D365 business processes, data models, integrations, and customer workflows 
  • Develop and execute migration strategies for CRM applications, workflows, customizations, integrations, and data assets
  • Provide architecture leadership for secure and reliable integrations across Salesforce, D365, LIMS, Billing, Medical Reporting, and other enterprise platforms 
  • Define platform architecture standards, governance models, security frameworks, and engineering best practices across Salesforce and D365 environments
  • Lead CRM data migration, master data management, data quality, reconciliation, and cutover planning to support controlled transformation 
  • Evaluate Salesforce capabilities, AppExchange solutions, and integration technologies that accelerate the roadmap and support future-state business needs 
• Technical Leadership & Modern Engineering Practices 
  • Partner with business stakeholders, product owners, and engineering teams to translate CRM modernization objectives into scalable technical solutions 
  • Establish best practices for source control, branching strategies, CI/CD pipelines, code review processes, and software lifecycle management utilizing GitHub Enterprise 
  • Drive adoption of modern software engineering practices, including DevSecOps, AI-enabled development workflows, automated testing, and continuous delivery 
  • Leverage AI-assisted software development tools, including Claude, GitHub Copilot, and related technologies, to improve engineering productivity, code quality, solution design, and documentation practices 
  • Mentor engineering teams on Salesforce architecture, Dynamics 365 solutions, CRM integration patterns, GitHub development workflows, and enterprise application modernization practices

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree AND 7+ Years of Professional Software Engineering experience OR 11+ years of professional software engineering experience 
• 10+ years of progressive software engineering, solution architecture, or enterprise platform experience, including technical leadership for complex transformation initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in the technology field, preferably Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline
• Deep hands-on experience with Salesforce platform architecture, development, governance, security, and enterprise integrations 
• Strong experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM architecture, customization, workflows, security, and integration patterns
• Proven success leading large-scale CRM modernization or migration initiatives, preferably involving Dynamics 365-to-Salesforce transformation and Order Management capabilities
• Experience defining transition-state and future-state architectures, coexistence strategies, migration roadmaps, cutover plans, and legacy-platform retirement approaches
• Experience designing integrations across CRM, ERP, LIMS, Order Management, Billing, Medical Reporting, and other enterprise systems
• Expertise in API-led and event-driven integration architecture, data migration, master data management, data quality, reconciliation, and cloud-based enterprise platforms
• Strong understanding of Azure Integration Services, including Azure Logic Apps, Azure Functions, API Management, Service Bus, and Event Grid
• Experience with AWS and Azure cloud technologies, including AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, microservices, event-driven architectures, Docker, and Kubernetes 
• Strong experience with GitHub Enterprise, branching and source-control strategies, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, automated testing, DevSecOps, and release management
• Experience with approved AI-assisted software development tools, such as Claude and GitHub Copilot, to improve engineering productivity, code quality, testing, solution design, and documentation
• Proficiency in one or more enterprise development languages and frameworks, such as C#, .NET, Java, or Python, with strong object-oriented design fundamentals 
• Experience developing REST-based services, Web APIs, and modern, distributed enterprise applications
• Experience with modern web technologies, such as JavaScript, TypeScript, React, or Angular, and the ability to guide front-end architecture and engineering standards 
• Experience with Oracle, SQL Server, or comparable enterprise data platforms, and familiarity with monitoring, visualization, and architecture tools such as Kibana, Grafana, ERwin, or Lucidchart
• Ability to translate business requirements into formal technical specifications, scalable solution designs, architecture decisions, and delivery of roadmaps
• Demonstrated ability to lead multiple complex, cross-functional initiatives, manage competing priorities, and communicate effectively with business, product, architecture, and engineering leaders
• Experience working in Agile delivery environments and with tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Rally, or GitHub 
• Experience operating in regulated healthcare or life sciences environments, with an understanding of FDA, GxP, HIPAA, patient privacy, data governance, security, and compliance requirements
• Relevant certifications, such as Salesforce Application Architect, System Architect, or Integration Architect; Microsoft Dynamics 365 or Power Platform Solution Architect; Azure Solutions Architect; AWS Solutions Architect; or GitHub certifications, are preferred
• Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of patient data privacy

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Boston, MA is $197,000 - $232,400 per year. The salary range is commensurate with Foundation Medicines compensation practice and considers factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, external market conditions, criticality of role, and internal equity. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for Foundation Medicine's benefits.
