The Role
The Principal Software Engineer drives organization-wide platform strategy, identifies and solves cross-team technical problems, and leads initiatives from research and prototyping through adoption. Do you want to develop more than just a product, while leading dev teams to victory? Do you want to layer AI into workflows to make engineer’s lives better and Saas products stronger?

Then Jobber might be the place for you! We’re looking for a Principal Software Engineer to be part of our Software Engineering team.

At Jobber, we don’t just build a product - we work on real problems that help people in small businesses to become successful. We are inspired by our company values: be humble, be supportive and give a shit, which are not just said, but are lived. We work in a collaborative environment where teams make decisions with autonomy and contribute directly to shaping the company’s future. We release early and often while dedicating time to address technical debt. We believe in getting instant feedback from our customers and leveraging that to make their lives easier.

We help employees grow professionally; we have a ton of onboarding resources, tutorials, hackathons and buddies to support learnings and provide opportunities to innovate. We have a range of experience levels on teams which allow for mentor/mentee opportunities. Leaders at Jobber work with empathy and support employees to build a healthy work-life harmony. Bring your dedication and passion to this job to fulfill your goals.

The team:

Our Software Engineering team is central to the success of Jobber - focused on creating software that delivers value to tens of thousands of users around the world. The Foundations group is responsible for the core technologies that all our users interact with every day: the mobile app, our web app, and the design system.

Within Foundations, three teams build what every other Jobber team ships on. UX Foundations owns Atlantis, our design system for web and mobile. The Web and Mobile Platform teams own the things feature teams shouldn't have to think about: builds and releases, third-party SDKs, performance, observability, and the migrations that keep our stack current. Recent work includes migrating our web app from Rails views to a React single-page app, shipping over-the-air updates for the mobile app, and building offline support for field workers on poor connections.

The role:

Reporting to a Senior Manager, Software Engineering, the Principal Software Engineer drives platform strategy and untangles the problems no single team owns. You notice what we should be doing before it lands on anyone's roadmap, make the case to leadership, and hand a working prototype to a team that can run with it. Nobody hands you a backlog.

Problems on our plate right now: extending offline support from a handful of screens into an architecture the whole mobile app can rely on, replacing third-party end-to-end testing with an in-house system, migrating the mobile app to Expo, and scaling agentic development through Amplify, our in-house AI engineering platform. Your first priority area will likely be mobile, but your influence spans all of engineering. Surfacing the problems we haven't found yet is part of a Principal Engineer's scope.

The Principal Software Engineer will:

  • Understand how and why our customers work the way they do, so you can design the platform they'll need next and the roadmap to get there

  • Stay ahead of the industry: research emerging technologies, prototype new approaches, and write design documents and findings that shape direction before work hits the roadmap

  • Own the technical decisions behind org-wide initiatives, documenting trade-offs and rationale, and see them through from proposal to adoption

  • Deliver high quality, well-structured code and raise the bar for everyone around you through mentorship and example

  • Build with agentic AI tools as a core part of your workflow, and push Amplify and our AI engineering practices forward for the whole organization

  • Break down complex technical problems for leadership, product, and engineers, each in the language they need

To be successful, you should have:

  • A track record of driving technical initiatives across multiple teams: spotting the problem, winning support from leadership and peers, and landing an outcome the organization still benefits from

  • Deep technical judgment you can demonstrate on demand, from architecture and trade-off decisions down to the details of the code

  • Strong front-end experience, particularly with React and TypeScript

  • Hands-on fluency with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or Copilot: you plan and delegate work to agents, verify what comes back, and refine your setup so the next task gets easier, for yourself and for others

  • Clear technical writing (RFCs, design documents, architecture decision records) that gets teams aligned without a meeting

  • Experience growing senior engineers through deliberate mentorship

It would be really great (but not a deal-breaker) if you had:

  • Production mobile experience, ideally React Native, or native iOS/Android depth you could bring to a React Native codebase quickly

  • Experience with GraphQL or Ruby on Rails in production

Please note: All interviews are currently being conducted virtually – via phone or video.
