Job summary
The Senior Principal Software Engineer is a hands‑on technical leader responsible for the architecture, design, and delivery of complex, highly available services across the DNS platform and related systems. This role operates across multiple teams and initiatives, setting technical direction, driving engineering best practices, and ensuring that our services are scalable, reliable, secure, and cost‑efficient.
What you will do
- Own the end‑to‑end architecture for major cross‑team initiatives on the DNS platform, including design, review, and guidance through implementation and rollout.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to Senior and Principal Engineers, helping them make sound design decisions and improve code quality and operational excellence.
- Drive the evolution of the platform’s architecture (services, data models, APIs, observability, and deployment patterns) in line with product and business goals.
- Lead and facilitate design reviews, RFCs, and technical deep dives, ensuring high standards for design, testing, performance, and security.
- Partner closely with Product Management and Engineering Management to shape technical roadmaps, identify dependencies, and de‑risk complex projects early.
- Anticipate and address systemic issues such as scalability bottlenecks, reliability gaps, andaccumulated technical debt, and lead long‑term remediation efforts.
- Act as a senior escalation point for critical production incidents, guiding troubleshooting,root‑cause analysis, and follow‑up improvements.
- Evaluate and champion key technologies, tools, and frameworks aligned with our stack (e.g. Java/Go services, cloud infrastructure, DNS and networking components, CI/CD tooling) and drive their adoption through clear examples and documentation.
- Represent the engineering organization in cross‑functional forums, architecture councils, and customer or partner discussions when deep technical context is required.
What you will have
- Significant industry experience in software engineering, including proven success at Senior/Principal Engineer level working on large‑scale, distributed backend systems.
- Deep expertise in our core tech stack (for example: Java and/or Go for backend services, REST/gRPC APIs, cloud platforms, relational and/or NoSQL data stores, caching, and modern CI/CD practices).
- Strong understanding of DNS, networking fundamentals, and operating high‑availability, latency‑sensitive services is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to design and evolve complex systems, including clear articulation oftrade‑offs around performance, reliability, security, and cost.
- Experience leading multi‑team initiatives, influencing without direct authority, and aligning stakeholders around a shared technical direction.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear design documents, present technical topics, and communicate effectively with both technical Andon‑technical partners.
