About Zuora
At Zuora, we help businesses grow smarter and adapt faster. Our platform powers modern business models — from subscriptions and usage-based pricing to AI-driven and outcome-based offerings — helping companies launch new products, automate complex billing, and unlock predictable, recurring revenue.
We’ve led the Subscription Economy for more than a decade. Now we’re evolving again by building the definitive platform for quote to cash and helping companies monetize their products and services with an adaptable, AI-ready foundation.
Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who is motivated to design, develop, test, and operate cutting-edge, highly scalable enterprise SaaS applications, and who can own significant components end-to-end while raising the technical bar around them.
Location & Work Arrangements
This role is based in our Foster City, CA office and follows a hybrid work model. Team members are expected to work onsite three days per week to foster collaboration, innovation, and team connectivity.
This is not a fully remote position.
Responsibilities
- Work with product management and other engineering teams to design, build, and operate Zuora's next-generation Revenue product.
- Design and develop highly flexible common components and APIs that enable product customizability and extensibility.
- Own the design and delivery of significant features or components within the team, from design through production support.
- Design and develop application components and services for scale, using modern backend and cloud-native patterns, including microservices, APIs, and event-driven integrations where appropriate.
- Understand the platform needs of other functional areas and provide design and development assistance as required.
- Understand user needs and build products that are intuitive and easy to use.
- Advocate for high-quality software and promote best practices to produce reliable, maintainable, and fault-tolerant systems.
- Participate in and help facilitate design and code reviews, raising the bar on engineering practices, code quality, observability, and testability.
- Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through pairing, code review, and technical guidance.
- Identify technical debt within your area and propose pragmatic ways to address it alongside feature work.
- Help drive Zuora's transition to microservices and cloud-based architecture.
Qualifications
- BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant degree.
- 8+ years of software development experience specializing in enterprise SaaS software.
- Strong programming experience in Java, Python, or another object-oriented language.
- Strong database and SQL knowledge, including Oracle or MySQL, data modeling, query analysis, transactions, and performance tuning. Plus experience with MongoDB and Redis.
- Experience designing and building web applications, with expertise in related concepts such as web services, SOA, RPC (REST, gRPC, Thrift), and API design.
- In-depth knowledge of common algorithms, data structures, design patterns, and their applications.
- Experience with production software delivery, CI/CD, observability, troubleshooting, and operational ownership.
- Track record of owning features or components end-to-end, from design through production.
- Good verbal and written communication, including the ability to explain technical decisions clearly to teammates and cross-functional partners.
- A demonstrated AI-first approach to engineering, leveraging AI across the design, development, and testing lifecycle to accelerate delivery, and drive impact beyond core areas of expertise.
Nice to Have
- Hands-on experience with Cloud and DevOps technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Kafka, AWS services).
- Experience implementing and operating performant, scalable distributed systems, particularly a SaaS product.
- Exposure to big data and NoSQL technologies.
- Familiarity with web application and UI concepts like AJAX, SPA, and sessions.
- Experience in payments, billing, financial systems, or other high-scale transaction platforms.
