Principal Software Engineer - Network Threat Detection

About the Role:
As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be instrumental in building, maintaining, and scaling the Network Detection and Response capabilities within VMware’s vDefend Advanced Threat Prevention (ATP). This cutting-edge solution empowers organizations to detect, prevent, and mitigate advanced threats. Working alongside a team of seasoned engineers and security experts, you will play a key role in shaping the future of network security and delivering the most
advanced cybersecurity solutions to protect global networks.

Success in this Role: What will you accomplish in your first 6-12
months?

 

Architect & Implement Scalable Detection Pipelines
Lead the design and implementation of high-performance network detection &
correlation pipelines using Python, SQL, and NoSQL backends, ensuring world-class cybersecurity analytics and operational reliability.

 

Build Robust Data-Streaming Solutions

Develop high-throughput, distributed data-processing systems for network detection data, utilizing Kafka messaging for scalable and resilient data flows.

Enhance Core System Components

Use Golang to expand and optimize core services, improving performance and
scalability in preparation for future detection solutions. Leverage Java to ensure
seamless integration with legacy systems, maintaining compatibility across platforms and extending the functionality of critical components for long-term impact.

Drive Kubernetes Deployment and Automation
Lead the productization and deployment of detection components within Kubernetes (K8s), utilizing Docker and Helm for seamless integration, automation, and scaling of cybersecurity tools. This will ensure robust and efficient deployment processes across diverse environments.

 

Innovate Network Detection Techniques
Leverage deep expertise in networking protocols (TCP/UDP, HTTP, VPNs) to enhance network-based detection techniques, driving improvements in detection efficacy and strengthening overall security defenses against advanced threats.

Drive CI/CD and Automation

Lead the development and refinement of CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and other automation tools, enhancing software delivery reliability, efficiency, and speed, while ensuring consistent and rapid deployment of detection components.

Facilitate Knowledge Sharing and Collaboration
Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by actively participating in team discussions, mentoring others, and promoting knowledge-sharing across engineering teams.

Engage with Internal and External Stakeholders

Serve as a key technical expert, equipping customer-facing teams with in-depth knowledge to enhance product understanding and deployment success. You’ll lead customer presentations and technical sessions, guiding stakeholders through complex security solutions and best practices to maximize the impact of our cybersecurity tools.

Our engineering process is fast-paced and collaborative. You’ll engage in brief daily sync-ups to align with team priorities, followed by focused execution and asynchronous communication to keep things moving. With every two-week Sprint, you’ll set your goals, manage your work with autonomy, and contribute to the collective success of the team. We use a range of tools to facilitate our work, including Jira for tracking progress, Confluence for documentation, GitHub for code reviews, and Google Chat for asynchronous communication. If
you’re experienced with these tools or similar ones, you’ll fit right in.

Education/Experience

Bachelor's degree in engineering/computer science and 12+ years of related experience or Masters degree in engineering/computer science and 10+ years of related experience

Compensation and Benefits

The annual base salary range for this position is $141,000 - $225,000 

This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in accordance with relevant plan documents, and equity in accordance with equity plan documents and equity award agreements.
