Our Healthcare Delivery Analytics Engineering team within the Analytics & Behavior Change (A&BC) division of our Data, Digital, Analytics, Technology (DDAT) organization is seeking a Principal Software Development Engineer.  We are looking for passionate, driven individuals who want to join a high-energy, growing team dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the patients being served by CVS Health businesses like MinuteClinic, Oak Street Health, and Signify Health.   

This role is at the forefront of AI innovation within healthcare, reinventing how we use data, analytics, and machine learning to ensure that the people who trust CVS Health with their care are supported across their healthcare journey by care teams armed with world-class diagnostic & analytics tooling Our team’s work is crucial to the mission of CVS Health: a fully integrated care delivery ecosystem utilizing digital, community, home-based and traditional channels, transforming care to drive superior health outcomes and a seamless patient and consumer experience. 

 

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be responsible for building best-in-class applications that integrate advanced analytics capabilities (predictive models, LLMs, vector search) into complex distributed systems built within the Google Cloud PlatformYou will work on cutting-edge products, leveraging your expertise in cloud technologies, software architecture, and distributed system design You will join a high-caliber engineering team dedicated to delivering impact quickly while ensuring our code base and architecture are constantly maturing, allowing us to iterate quickly while we explore bold technical solutions to incredibly complex problems, and then pivot to scaling execution across the lives of millions. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Software Development Mastery: Demonstrated excellence in software development with a disciplined approach to problem-solving.  Excels at breaking down complex problems into multi-step plans within an Agile development environment.  Deep understanding of SOLID principles and similar software development philosophies. 

  • Engineering Excellence:  Develops solutions that are well engineered, flexible, resilient, operable, maintainable, and can be delivered on schedule. Ensures a balance between tactical and strategic technology solutionsEnsure all NFRs (e.g., performance, availability and fail-over, scalability, security, etc.) are properly articulated, and work with all parties to guarantee that the software products that are delivered meet these objectives. 

  • Architectural Expertise: Strong architectural sense with experience in various software architectures and messaging patternsProven ability to drive large solutions across multiple applicationsAble to analyze existing architectures and develop opportunities for improvements in alignment with industry best practices. 

  • Cloud Distributed SystemsExperience working in high-volume, high-frequency distributed systems and tackling the hardest scalability problems presentedExperience with major cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and modern service, interface, and messaging patterns. 

  • On the Cutting Edge: Experience integrating excellence in software development, cloud platforms, and distributed system design and architecture into systems involving machine learning and language models.  Investigate and design novel and unique technology solutions and lead the building of POCs to validate technical hypothesis and provide reference architectural solutions. 

  • Analytics & Non-Relational Exposure: Broad knowledge encompassing the data and analytics space: work orchestration, OLAP and non-relational databases (BigQuery, Mongo Atlas, KV stores, caches)You know the right data storage for the job and understand how to integrate them with large-scale service architectures. 

  • Critical Thinking: Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to move fluidly between high-level abstract thinking and detailed implementation.  Strong collaboration skills in technical settings, able to help others understand complex ideas by simplifying and clarifying with ease.

Required Qualifications 

  • 8+ years of software industry experience with 4+ years as a technical leader. 

  • 5+ years leading technical architecture initiatives that impact many value streams. 

  • 5+ years designing and developing distributed systems, employing a disciplined approach. 

  • 8+ years involved in requirements analysis, estimation within a formal SDLC. 

  • 8+ years of mastery with development languages (Python, Java, C#, Go, etc.). 

  • 8+ years of relational databases, including in the cloud. 

  • 5+ years of non-relational databases (document stores, KV stores, caches). 

  • 5+ years architecting solutions in any major cloud. 

  • 5+ years with micro-services architecture, APIs, real-time system integrations. 

  • 5+ years of automated unit and integrating testing. 

  • 3+ years of experience and mastery with Python. 

  • 3+ years with asynchronous messaging. 

  • 2+ years with machine learning models in a production environment. 

  • 1+ years with large language models in a production environment. 
     

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience building and operating large scale distributed systems. 

  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to change requirements. 

  • Experience with SAFE practices or able to work in SAFE practices and agile methodologies. 

  • Experience related to security oriented projects. 

  • Exposure to CI/CD and DevOps. 

  • Software or analytics experience within the healthcare industry. 

  • Strong architectural skills, including diagramming  

  • Excellent communications and presentation skills with the ability to communicate effectively in visual, verbal, and written form to teams, clients, and leadership. 

  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities with minimal supervision. Self-directed. 

  • Knowledge in GCP architecture, commands and experience designing & optimizing software and data engineering patterns 

 

Education 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, or an equivalent combination of formal education and experience. 

  • Master's degree is a plus 

 

 

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$144,200.00 - $288,400.00

This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.  The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.  This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.  This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
