Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration offers an excellent opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer (GAITS - M&S) (26-362) to join our team of talented and diverse professionals. Located in Colorado Springs, CO this role is essential to supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a key component of the Missile Defense System. It enables the U.S. president, secretary of defense, and combatant commanders to plan missile defense operations, monitor battles, and control sensors and weapon systems worldwide. C2BMC supports layered missile defense against threats across all ranges and flight phases. It enhances performance by networking and synchronizing sensors and weapon systems at global and regional levels. C2BMC is required for all ground and flight tests verifying missile defense capabilities.
This position is for a Software Engineer on the C2BMC Global program supporting the development of future missile defense capabilities.
Essential Functions:
- Responsible for software development in the C++ language for Advanced Framework for Simulation Integration and Modeling (AFSIM), while continuing to support existing Java-based components
- Maintains currency, debugs, and configures related software products
- Works from specifications to develop new simulation entities and/or extend development frameworks to support new entity behaviors
- Responsible for performing analysis and technical support of systems software products, including problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support, by leveraging general knowledge of related disciplines, applications implications, and customer areas
- Assists with the design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs
- Interfaces with other system support groups to resolve problems, set standards, and improve the overall efficiency of the operating system
- Designs, codes, tests, and implements tools for operations automation
- Works on most phases of software systems programming applications and may require instruction and guidance in other phases
Basic Qualifications:

- A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited university, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with 3 years of relevant work experience; or 9 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree
- Applicants must have a current active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
- Software engineering and software development with strong AFSIM and C++ experience, especially in developing AFSIM plugins for high-performance, real-time simulation
- Software engineering and software development with strong Java experience, especially in Spring-based application frameworks using xml configurations that do not leverage Spring Boot
- Understanding of TCP/IP and Pub/Sub usage within simulation contexts
- Must have experience developing and working with simulation frameworks for both test and training use cases
- Required knowledge of basic software practices such as:
- Coding standards
- Configuration management
- Must have the ability to work effectively in a rapid-paced team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with AFSIM plugin development in C++ in Eclipse and/or VSCode
- Experience developing enterprise applications using Eclipse, Visual Studio Code, and Maven development environments
- Experience with Java Spring
- Familiarity with Java foundation classes and toolkits
- Interest in simulation entity development and simulation control user interfaces

Primary Level Salary Range: $103,600.00 - $155,400.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
